With the upcoming movie “The Purge” I was curious what others would do. The basic premise is that one day a year, for 12 hours, all violent crimes (besides high level government assasinations) are legal and emergency services (police, 911, etc) are suspended. The idea is that it cuts down on crime for the rest of the year by allowing people a change to expend their angry/violent tendencies. Movie link- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2184339/.
Let’s say that you HAD to commit a violent crime (a serious one) or your entire family would be killed. What would you do? Pick someone specific? Not do anything? What do you think of the basis of this movie? Is anyone going to see it?
I know it’s tough to be in a “what if” situation, but I thought it was very interesting to think about. For the purpose of the post, ignore religion.

@Schatzie821: If it HAD to be a violent crime, there is one ex-boyfriend of mine in particular that I would beat nearly to death with every available object. I wouldn’t kill him– I’d leave him to suffer the way he did to me.

That movie looks so ridiculous. I’m guessing almost ALL of the people would not need that “outlet” and wouldn’t want to commit a violent crime, plus I don’t think ANY women would dare leave their heavily secured house as they would not be able to commit any crimes because I assume they’d be gang raped and murdered. I’d just flee the country, what if someone decided to bomb the white house or something?

@fiver: haha agreed! Darling Husband and I saw the previews and were like “clearly we’d just secure ourselves inside, armed to the teeth and ready to defend ourselves if necessary, but that is NOT the time to get out for a Slurpee.” I’m sure we’ll watch the movie eventually, because we watch EVERYTHING, but I’m not expecting to be blown away. I’m sure only hardened criminals would have the balls to leave the house during that anyway, in which case it wouldn’t be much different from any other night with a bunch of armed criminals walking around looking for people to rob/rape/kill!

i really don’t think i’d be able to severely hurt someone out of nowhere unless they were threatening me and my family.

@s2bmrscook: yes yes yes! I was thinking the EXACT same thing 🙂

@fiver: I agree with most of your points. Especially about most people not needing that type of outlet.
If I was in a situation that desparate, it would be tough. But I am pretty sure if I felt that cornered I would protect my family. It’s hard to imagine!

I would severely beat a random person. BUT I would do it to someone who I saw commiting a very violent crime or murder to another person, because that way I’d save an innocent, beat the shit out of a bad guy AND save my entire family. WIN WIN.

@fiver: yeah, totally agree. I’d just install a panic room or something the second I heard that law passed a d be holed up in there until it passes. Even if I had somebody I wanted to hurt no guarantees that somebody ELSE isn’t looking to kill a stranger.

I’d severely injure the person/ people who came to kill my family when I refused to hurt anyone.

But in your hypothetical, I think I’d kill someone I know. I was going to pick severely hurt someone I know, but then wouldn’t they be out for revenge the next year? haha. And I just wouldn’t feel any compulsion to hurt someone that I don’t know, but I wouldn’t want my family to be hurt, and I can think of a few people I know that suck at life.

I don’t have anyone I want to hurt. Even people who hurt me. Revenge hurts the person who commits it as much as the person upon whom it is exacted.
Just saw the part where you had to kill someone–hmm, like someone else said, i’d just kill the people who went after my family.

I could actually totally see a bunch of people forming a vigilante mob and going to the homes of child molesters, animal abusers, etc and killing them. But I suppose in the movie those people would probably not exist since crime is apparently so low.

Since OP states we have to choose a crime, I would kill my childhood molester. That way, I save my family and get revenge on the person who hurt me so badly.
By the way, this movie sort of freaks me out- yes I know it’s just another violent movie but it leaves me wary about going to a theatre to see it (you know, with all the real-life crazy people that may decide to pull their own Purge at a theatre? *shudders*)

If I absolutely had to do something, I think I’d hunt down murderers, rapists, drug lords, and other people that would harm innocent people. I might also go after the people who thought this was a good idea. Maybe not kill them, but do something to make them see why this isn’t a good idea.
But I agree that this movie is ridulous. A vast majority of people actually have morals and wouldn’t feel the need to steal, harm, or kill someone. Just because you won’t be punished by the law, doesn’t mean everyone is going to go bat shit crazy. Most people refrain from committing crimes because it’s the right thing to do, not because the gorvernment says so. The government isn’t that influential.
Actually, what I think would happen is communities would put together their own law enforcement to deter people from committing these now legal crimes.
