I am aware that the date is a little over a year away, but the thought of complementary colors for my hair color is constantly plaguing my mind. I am fair skinned (but not transparent), no freckles, and naturally have a red hue to my light brown hair. Since I have met my fiancé, I have been coloring my hair various shades of red (which he and I both love). Right now my hair and complexion are similar to that shades of Marcia Cross, medium/light auburn with “porcelin-esque” skin.
In addition, I know that August wedding colors can range from summery to fall colors. I want to keep a classic traditional wedding with a pop of color to make it somewhat unique or trendy. I’m drawn to royal blue shades (and would love to incorporate royal blue peep-toe shoes for my “something blue”) but am concerned how the blue will look against black tuxedos (fiancé said he will not waiver from this option). I also like deep oranges, yellows, reds, greens, browns, golds, greys… I mean really, the list goes on.
My two sisters will be in my wedding, one with dark complexion, dark hair, the other is fair freckly and a strawberry blonde. My other two bridesmaids will have dark hair and dark complexion as well. I want colors that will complement me as well as my bridesmaids… a complicating task at hand. I have yet to pick out flowers or bridesmaids dresses, so the good news is that I have a blank pallet for the most part.
I’m afraid that my wedding will look really “punchy” with bold colors, and pastels will, out of the question, will wipe me out. I guess I need some help narrowing it down. I would really appreciate the advice from my fellow brides! I look forward to your suggestions!

I’d say go with a fall pallete in cool tones: deep reds, oranges, yellows, browns. I’m not feeling too strongly about the blue. good luck!

I agree that pastels may not be the best bet for you or your wedding party. However, so much looks great with red hair and dark hair looks great with everything. If you love the idea of royal blue, but think it will be too harsh, you could use a light blue and a medium with it. This also works great with pinks. I am using an eggplant color. However, it is strictly an accent color with silver–I am not using it all over the place. So, the bridesmaids and some reception accents (placecards, table numbers) are the eggplant. The groomsmen are in black tuxes with gray cummerbund/tie.

I have red hair and I never let it stop me from any colors! I think you should pick whichever colors you like.
I also wanted to chime in about blue: I think it goes great with red hair. I get the most positive comments when I wear blues, especially pool and bright light blue colors. I guess every “red” hair coloring is different, but I’m all about blue. As long as it is not too dark, it will be fine with black tuxes.
If you are worried about things being too punchy, just pick some more subtle main colors and used a brighter color as an accent. So, for example, you could do black, silver and a brighter blue.

Thanks for all of the advice! I definately ruled out the blue, I was too hesitant from the beginnning… I’m thinking about using a pewter grey for the bm dresses with deep reds and oranges for flowers. I think this will really capture the timeless yet chic look that we’re looking for! I love the bridesmaid dress “pewter” that I saw while in David’s Bridal, but I was not impressed with the style of dresses that they have. Ideally, I’m searching for some pewter/grey v-neck cocktail dresses for the girls… any suggestions where I could find these? My bridesmaids are located in Milwaukee, Chicago, and Portland, so something that is reasonably priced and reasonably located would be perfect! Also wondering what kinds of flowers will be in season for an August wedding that are the deep oranges and reds that we want, research is pointing to dahlia’s and tulips… thoughts?

I’m disappointed you rules out the blue… I think royal blue looks amazing on everyone and transitions well season to season. I’m also a read-head, so I give you major credit for even dabbling in oranges and reds. There are so many bad options (to match my coloring) intermixed with a few good ones, so I decided to just avoid the debacle all together. We’re doing purple and gray. I’m sure no matter what you decide will be beautiful!

I think a royal (not navy) blue, would be great, and blue and black look lovely together. You could go for a range of colors using royal blue, silver/grey, and maybe a bright eggplant/purple color. Check out the dresses in this pic:

A girlfriend of mine has beautiful red hair and her colors were “lemon and lime”. Love the idea for pewter colored bm dresses- and I agree about David’s. I was not impressed with their dress styles at all, but had great luck at Alfred Angelo. Plus they seem to have locations everywhere.
