I’ve been to the Royal Playa del Carmen and honestly, I don’t get the rave reviews.

The rooms and location were great, the pools were small, crowded, noisy, and lacking in shade, there was nowhere to enjoy a quiet evening drink (just the lobby bar or the bar right outside, which were super-loud until about 11pm, and were then deserted), and we found the food just OK. I honestly would not return, unless I got a REALLY good deal and was on a girl’s holiday.

IMO there are much better resorts in Mexico in the same/similar price bracket.

But it’s very personal; let me know if you have any questions, and I’ll do my best to answer 🙂

My close friends were married at the Royal Playa Del Carmen last summer and it was absolutely perfect. The best part really is the location being right off of 5th ave. Each night after eating our all inclusive dinners we would all meet up to go to a lounge or club on 5th ave. The all inclusive food really was good, including the reception dinner. Breakfast at spice every morning was great espescially the fruit bar and fruit sushi. Also, there is a great coffee shop that is kinda off the beaten path. I also liked that every room has a hammock on the balcony. my friends were married under a gazebo on the beach and then moved the reception indoors due to the weather. Also, they used a photographer out of cancun because they were not impressed with the resort’s photog options. This really is an ideal resort for a destination wedding. You should go for it!

We stayed at The Royal, Cancun in November 2012 for 2 weeks, my FH actually proposed there. I thought it was wonderful, although if you are looking for loud late parties its not the place to be.

The staff were all amazingly friendly and helpful, so much so that we are hoping to return this December for a slightly delayed honeymoon.

Royal Cancun for sure! 🙂

We stayed at both resorts on our Honeymoon last June. We started at the Royal Cancun and then decided to try out their sister hotel in Playa del Carmen. After getting to the Royal Playa del Carmen, we wished we would have stayed at the Royal Cancun but we didn’t have very many days left and we didn’t want to keep switching back and forth.

They forgot our luggage at the Royal Cancun during our switch and we almost had to pay for them to bring it back to us but someone else was scheduled to come from the Royal Cancun so they arranged for the shuttle to bring our luggage with them but we had to wait a couple hours for it to arrive.

Our hotel room was huge at the Royal Cancun! We had a beautiful view of the ocean and our window/balcony door stretched the entire length of the wall. Our room at the Royal Playa del Carmen was so small and the “ocean view” room they gave us had a tiny window with no view of the ocean. We asked to be switched into another room and this time, we could only see the ocean if we stood out on our balcony and leaned over. It was also an “ocean view” but it faced a courtyard. We were tired of dealing with the people at the front desk so we decided to stay with this room because it was bigger than the first room they gave us upon arrival at the Royal Playa del Carmen.

The beach was dirty, small, and crowded at the Royal Playa del Carmen. The beach at the Royal Cancun was beautiful with white sand. Our best pictures are from the Royal Cancun.

We thought the quality of the room service food was much better at the Royal Cancun. We even ordered the same items at the Royal Playa del Carmen and it was not as nice as the food we received at the Royal Cancun.

Also, the Royal Playa del Carmen is spread out and you have to walk all over the place to get to the different restaurants and the beach. At the Royal Cancun, everything was in one hotel or very close by. You took an elevator to your room, instead of walking everywhere. We got lost trying to find our room a couple of times at the Royal Playa del Carmen.

We wished that we would have stayed at the Royal Cancun but we made the most of it and explored the shops near Playa del Carmen.

Be wary of the people selling time shares at both places! We were naive and thought it was a friendly conceierge that would help us with our stay, but she tried to get us to meet her for breakfast to sell timeshares to us. That happened as soon as we got to the hotel, so that put a damper on our mood so make sure to say “no, thank you” to them once they start trying to pull you over to their desk.

Also, make note of the check in time. Our flight was early in the morning and our hotel room was not ready when we arrived so we had to wait several hours before we could go to our room. But the room was beautiful 9at the Royal Cancun) so we were happy about that. After staying at both resorts, I would recommend the Royal Cancun!

We are considering our honeymoon in Cancun or in Playa del Carmen this August, but every time we think we are ready to click the book button, a family member asks us “why would you want to even take the risk?” The risk of the crime and everything scary happening in Mexico.

Are any of you concerned about this? It looks perfect there, and we’d like that tropical vacation for 10 mights under 6k. This place seems to make that feasible for us…I am trying to get over our fears and offer some proof to my folks we’d be okay…but will we be?

Thanks so much in advance for your thoughts!!!
