Hi honey bees,
so my dress has finially arrived (vera wang modified mermaid love love love) and now i need help with the sash.
the dress comes with a sash but as the dress is quite plain (its a velvet one) i think i can get away with something more exciting. The dress is very tight and i cannot aford to put on any weight, my tummy sticks out a bit so i think the sash may help hide or it could go the other way.
this is the dress:
sorry it needs steaming. As i have to buy the sash online i wont be able to try it on with the dress. the dress is made out of silk organza so a very light fabric. the girls are wearing almost a nude pink and the groom a black suit so i would probably be able to get away with anything. I dont mind being adventurous but i dont want to look stupid either. Jewelly wise i have a heap of pearl jewellery which is mostly chunky but i have not decided on the finial piece but probably a statement nexklace or earings.
so the sashs i have been looking at are as follows, help bee’s which one.

The black one with the bow seems like it would overpower the dress. It looks ok in the stock photo, but I don’t think it would translate well in the real world. Imagine sitting with that on your hip… or having people hug you.
The skinny black sash with the ivory flowers is very pretty, but it might attract attention to you tummy, which you said you wanted to hide a bit. Skinny belts with form-fitting dresses are not forgiving at all.
I voted for the handmade tulle sash because your dress is so classic and pretty, it needs only minimal accessories. The texture of the tulle and flowers is a great complement to the lovely simplicity of your dress. You could also try something with a little sparkle…

I like the all-black sash BUT I think it wouldn’t work well IRL. Maybe it’s because I’m Type A but I would be obsessing over keeping it puffed up and artsy like it is in the picture and I think all the hugging/movement/etc. of the wedding day will squash it down or cause it to droop. I think out of all three, the last one will work the best since it has the flowy/romantic feel of your dress and is similar to the existing sash (compared to the other two). I agree with Miss Mauverick about a sparkly sash.

I would try one with bling but of the three I like the third!

I voted for #3/tulle but I think a beaded pearl sash would look really pretty, too. Congrats on the dress! I love VW!
ETA: What about a plain black grosgrain or silk sash? Then you would have the unexpected color, width you’re wanting, and simple design (not like #1). Something like this:

I lie the third one best!

wow I really did not expect to get such awesome advice and i feel you are all stearing me in the right direction.
So far the hand made tulle is the most popular, i i think its in my heart as well. I have always loved the statement look of the black though as well, and yes Zouave it was vera wang dresses like those pics that first made me go wow i love that look.
so i have found a pick which features the vera wang audrey sash (the hand made tulle sash appears to be a copy of that). I imagine it may look a bit like this:
I do also like the bling belts but i have never been a bling girl so i probably would not feel confident starting on my wedding day. i do love it on others, stunning.

White By Vera has new sashes that are for the fall collection. Maybe the black velvet would be stunning.

I like the black band with white flowers

@nikstar: Looks great! I’m not a blingy-sash person either, so I understand not wanting one. I also have a VW gown and really liked the black sash look at first (because of that picture above!), but I felt more ‘bridal’ with a ivory sash in the end.

I voted for the handmade tulle. Just b/c I think the black will overwhelm the dress, the skinny black might not be enough of a statement, but I think the third is perfect!

@BooRadley: i would love to see a pic of your dress

Since your girls will be wearing pink, you might want to wear this sash, you will complement each other nicely 🙂

Pretty dress! I prefer the first sash.
Have you thought about getting a corset? My stomach stuck out a little too but my corset fixed that. I got the Hollywood Dream Corset from Fredericks of Hollywood for $64 but there’s lots of the dream corsets on Ebay for half of that.
