You have what many in the jewelry world refer to as DSS- Diamond Shrinkage Syndrome.

It’s normal!

I never wanted a HUGE gaudy thing anyway, but when you get used to your ring, it doesn’t seem as “big”. Not in a bad way, it just means it becomes more and more a part of you. And besides, the best part about the e-ring is the way it sparkles in different light levels. It’s really an eye catcher!

Mine is a 2.62 princess solitaire and sometimes it looks small and sometimes it looks huge.  I also have a .85 that is more appropriate for my work.  My coworkers are all very modest.  Several are extremely well off but choose not to wear larger stones.  In fact, several have non-traditional stone rings.

This happend to me.  When I first got my ring – a 3 stone halo, I thought the center stone was much bigger than it actually is. The ring’s total is 2.5 ct but the center is .75.  I thought it was at least a 1ct.  I still love it though.

This happens to me quit often. I fluctuate between thinking that my ring is nice and big and beautiful. to on the small side and beautiful lol … I guess it just depends on my mood idk.

When I picked out my ring, the jewler said “diamonds shrink over time,” and at first I thought she meant that they LITERALLY would shrink….a DUH moment for me.  When I first got my ring I felt like it was GROWING each day…it seemed bigger and bigger every time I looked at it.  Now, I agree with the other ladies.  It depends on the day, it depends on the light.  My ring is not huge, .9, but he got me such a great quality diamond that even if my ring isn’t the biggest in the room, I often feel like it sparkles the most!

Mine shrinks ever so slightly about each week lol. Solitaires are really bad with the shrinking effect… my 1 ct looks like it should be much bigger =/ lol.

I have realized that when I’m warm and my fingers are swollen the diamond looks a lot bigger.  When my fingers are cold the diamond looks smaller.  I have a .5 princess cut.

@Quitos Girl: i have the opposite effect! when my hands are all swollen, i feel like my ring looks tiny in comparison, but on cool days, i’m pretty proud of the size.

comparing with friends makes it hard too. my Maid/Matron of Honor has a stunning 2.1 while mine is 1.33 carats. HOWEVER, there is something to be said about cut/clarity and setting… because despite hers being significantly larger, both our rings are frequently mistaken for 1.5 carats…

Mine’s only shrinking because of the Bee and the ring envy it induces! I have a .59 carat Lucida cut, which is a very deep cut (somewhat of a round diamond bottom and a princess cut top) so it sparkles a ton and I’ve always looked at it thinking how big it is! Some of the rings on here are so beautiful and make mine look teeny. I still love it, though. I’ve also noticed it looked bigger after I got it cleaned! 😉

@bijou214: I’m thinking that maybe it’s because when my fingers are swollen they look shorter.  I normally have long fingers, at least for the size of the rest of my hand.  Now that the weather’s been so warm here, my diamond definitely has been looking bigger!

Glad to know it’s not just me 🙂 I am suffering from the same thing and my ring is still fairly new. I became engaged on 11/22/11 and in some lighting it looks nice ang big and in my “office” lighting it looks smaller to me. I love my ring but sometimes I secretly  wish the center stone was a wee bit larger. It’s a 1.5….I wouldn’t mind going up to a 1.75…but regardless, LOVE it and am thankful/grateful for the man that gave it to me 🙂 I too, sometimes feel like it isn’t as sparkly but I think that’s a lighting issue too….because I am obsessed with cleaning my ring, I do it every other day…nuts I am!

So far it hasn’t happened… I still look down and marvel that that’s really mine. But sounds like it’s normal!

My ring definitely looks different to me on different days.  I’m sure it’s a mood thing.  So I know how you feel.  But don’t worry about the word dainty.  To me, dainty = feminine, which is a good thing.
