@adoc86:  I’m essential and not furloughed, so no.

Also, if you look into unemployment (my agency has been sending out fact sheets) – you generally have to be unemployed for two weeks and be able to document that you’re actively looking for work.

@abbie017:  Ahh, well then if you aren’t furloughed then yeah, not an option.

I know my local news stated that hundreds of thousands of govt employees in MD have already applied for unemployment. The waiting period differs by state. Definitely something anyone who is furloughed should be looking into.

@adoc86:  I live in VA – so the guidelines I gave were for us.  But regardless, all states will let you apply, but the waiting period is two weeks – so you still have to be out for two weeks.

The larger point is, this is going to go on for weeks…and this is all over a 6 week CR, which brings us to middle of November when it potentially could happen again.  There are over a million people without pay right now – furloughed feds, contractors (who will never see a dime of backpay), and private industry workers (who will never see a dime of any sort of reimbursement).  Downtown is a ghost town.  When I get in, my normally bustling street is deserted.  My commute has been a joke.  People outside of the immediate DC area don’t see or feel the incredibly dramatic impacts of this shutdown, but they still need to do something to stop it.

@abbie017:  Actually in Maryland there is no waiting period for unemployment and in PA its 1 week. Waiting periods differ from state to state.

I don’t work in DC but I see a huge difference in my commute every morning. Most of my army base is furloughed so the ghost town reference is definitely relatable.

@adoc86:  I know — I said what I said was for Virginia.  You can apply whenever, but there is a waiting period, which is two weeks in Virginia.

I know some of you have said that your contracts don’t allow you to protest, but it seems that the time is ripe for a protest.  This is ridiculous.  The people least affected are the ones making decisions.

My mother, who has almost 30 years in and is a GS 12 or 13 (can’t remember which it is) is looking for part time work at Bass Pro– this is insane. I wish the midterm elections were this November, maybe that way Americans will remember how pissed off they are and not give them a year to forget the idiocy.

@abbie017:  Alrighty. I saw what you said about being from VA, but it seemed like you were still generalizing the waiting time period in your subsequent post. I just wanted to make it clear that 2 weeks isn’t the case everywhere in case some bees in other states were not aware of this. My fault 🙂

@Mrs_Amanda:  yes!! After a year people forget – sure maybe not those that are furloughed without retroactive pay, but other people who are less affected will forget the ridiculous show these idiots are putting on. Though if the elections were this November I don’t think we would be where we are now. Being voted out would be the main concern of those in Congress so someone would have given in at an earlier point IMO.

@wabanzi:  I know that they have the numbers and a few Republicans have started to speak out about Tea Party Group. However they aren’t talking as loudly nor are they pushing Boehnber to bring it to a vote. So saying they would support a clean cr when they aren’t going to fight for it is pretty useless. That is the most frustrating part, they are letting a small group to be in control. Mainly because Boehner asked them to be patient. However if they were at his office demanding it and fighting for it and being just as vocal as the other group of senators this would be over by now.

I think this whole thing sucks for them, esp when you heard about the crazy lunch they had were there was a ton of infighting going on. Meanwhile they walking a fine line because they don’t want to be out fighting  publicly with Party members. I think they need to get together for this country, but also for the party.

-Waves to the furlough club- … 🙁 I hope this all gets resolved soon. I’m dreading my next paycheck, and the one after that which may be a big fat $0.

@abbie017:  Probably not. I have a feeling it’s unrelated anyway..
