@peachacid:  ugh, this is all so depressing. This country just won’t work if either party continues using the budget to try to force changes to laws that have already passed. In politics sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. It sucks to lose but then you have to MOVE ON to get stuff done! I’m just so over it. I wish we could fire congress and start over again.

@Scc6a:  Is there a petition to stop Congress from being paid until they resolve the budget?

@peachacid:  lol would that help?  Don’t they have to pass it? No one is going to take their own paycheck away.

@Atalanta:  C’mon now…Obama took a 5% paycut for sequestration…everyone is doing their part…lol.  Yeah, I know they wouldn’t vote for it.

@peachacid:  I get what you’re saying but if I can’t pay rent, I can’t pay rent. Getting a minimum wage job that will pay me $800 a month will not pay for my $1700 a month rent (which is just rent…not utilities, food, gas, etc.)

We can get a bunch of part time jobs, and it may come to that. I’m seeing all over that the Senate keeps killing bills that would give Feds back pay, and I know FI’s job certainly won’t give him back pay.

So what will I do? Cancel the wedding and use that money to live off of. It’s all we can do for now.

@Apple_Blossom:  NSF proposals are due today!! EEP! We submitted ours yesterday, thankfully. I heard that 70% of people wait to submit on the day of the deadline, so I can only imagine what those people are going through today, if the site is down or they aren’t taking anymore…? Who knows if ours will even be read or considered.

My advisor’s wife works for the CDC and is laid off for now. Our NSF funding from previous grants shouldn’t be affected though.

@peachacid:  I don’t know about a petition. A congressman did introduce a bill to suspend pay but I haven’t heard much about it since. Surprise, surprise.

In addition, I just heard from all my contractor friends – they’re being sent home. All but like 3.

Also, it’s nice that active duty members of the military will be getting paid, but there are plenty of people who make way less money who won’t be getting paid. And if this goes on much longer, veterans will really be struggling because their benefits will be affected.

@Atalanta:  Did your friends from Europe experience delays or anything with Customs or is that not impacted?

I’m so sorry to all of you who are affected by this. It sucks donkey balls.

In my job I’m still working/getting paid but I work in Immigration and this is shutting/delaying almost all of my work so I’m not sure how my employer will handle me just coming in and not doing anything.

For @giru618 USICS is still processing Green Card application as well as other applications (ex: H1B/O) because USCIS is funded primarily through application fees, but there will be delays.

However the Dept of State has stopped doing visa applications, Dept of Labor isn’t doing Labor Certifications, Everify is shut down.

UGH it’s a mess.

@HelloKitty615 Security and enforcement functions as well as agencies considered essential to national security, such as border security (CBP) and customs (ICE), will likely continue operations near normal capacity.

…at least that’s what I heard.

@MrsNewDay:  I haven’t heard from them.  I just know they are supposed to be arriving today.  I’ll ask them when I see them.
