I know this is very delayed but it hasn’t been until now that I could finally sit down and write this post.
We had a packed schedule the entire two weeks that he was up to help me move down to his house/country. He and his parents came in on the 17th at the same time as my last final exam, my sister’s graduation happened that night, I had graduation at 8 am on the 18th, and we had a family party on the 19th where he proposed. This is where we’ll get all detail-y:
My then-SO had asked my father’s permission to ask me to marry him in the morning before we went to take his parents on a bit of sightseeing and then to run errands for the party that was later in the afternoon. Apparently it was while I was getting ready and obsessing over the details of everything I had to get done before 2 pm. We had breakfast at the local diner and went over our schedule, picked up his parents, and drove into the city to wander around the 100+ year old public market. We had a great time and got to see some truly beautiful flowers and goods from local artists/shops. After finishing the tour of the market, we drove back home, left his parents with my parents to help get the party set up and then went to run the last few errands we needed to get done for the party.
Family parties that aren’t for holidays, weddings, anniversaries tend to be super casual so I was wearing a tank top, capri yoga pants, and super comfy but super bulky flip flops. I hadn’t even really bothered to do my hair much beyond washing it and sticking it up in a bun. His parents got along really well with all of my family and to be honest, you almost couldn’t pick them apart. As the evening started to wind down and we were all eating cake, my then-SO found me and started to pull my arm a little because he wanted me to go somewhere. My knee jerk reaction was “What? I have cake.” but he pulled on my arm a little bit more and said he wanted me to go with him. I thought maybe someone was looking for me but instead of walking to someone at the party he started to walk me over to a lilac bush at the corner of my parents’ property that’s close to the pond. Unfortunately the walk was interrupted by an uncle that was coming to say goodbye but we eventually got to where he wanted. It was a very simple proposal, “Zephi, will you marry me?” and of course I said yes!
We got back to the party and managed to get everyone’s attention (only one of my cousins had left by then) and we announced to everyone. Lots of happy applause, hugs, kisses, well wishes, and a few of “it’s about time!”. The news spread quickly from New York down into New Zealand and we quickly got some congratulations from his siblings.
The rest of the time we spent visiting with various people and scurrying to get everything ready for me to make that long move from New York to New Zealand. Although we didn’t get to do everything I had wanted to, there is always the visits that we’ll make up to New York and memories of things I had done. We did spend one day in Santa Monica before the long flight between continents and we met back up with his parents.
The last week or so has been much less glamorous. It has been all about cleaning, settling in, acclimating to my new home, and getting the paper work settled for my pup to come over in the next couple of months.
Of course, no new engagement post on the ‘Bee can be complete without some ring porn though, right? All photos were taken on or immediately by the lilac bush he proposed near.
