I have my heart set on having my groom in a white dinner jacket, a la Humphrey Bogart, for our outdoor cocktail reception in early June. However, unless you want a Havana Nights-inspired 100% polyester one, white dinner jackets must be purchased, not rented.
I don’t feel that I can ask my groomsmen to buy dinner jackets, so my questions is: Can I have my groom buy his white dinner jacket and then have all the groomsmen in normal black tuxes? My bridesmaids are in black cocktail dresses, so it would be an all-black wedding party and the groom and myself in white.

I actually prefer the groom be in something different – my BM’s will be in black cocktail dresses, the GM’s will be in black tux’s with black vests and ties, and the groom will have a black shadow-stripe tux with black vest and royal purple tie.
I really like when there’s something distinguishing the groom from the groomsmen. I honestly hate seeing a photo of the groom and groomsmen and I can’t even tell who the he** the groom is. lol

i love the idea!! i was thinking of doing the same thing since my ladies will be (just like your ladies) in black dresses…i think the groom and bride should stand out…i like the vintage feel of the groom in an ivory or while jacket…my dress is very marliyn monroe-ish so i think its a good combo!!

I think it could definitely work…though I suspect b/c of the color contrast it will really depend on the styles of the jacket. Maybe buy your FI’s jacket first and then decide which tuexes to rent?

Thanks! The jacket I like for the groom is a shawl collar: http://www.josbank.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=13199&pcount=&Product_Id=22
…that was my other question. Do I then have to do the groomsmen in black shawl collars? That to me looks like they’re going to a night at the opera – not the look I’m going for!) Can the groomsmen just rent classic black tuxes, like these? http://www.menswearhouse.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay_10051_12169_10601_10127_-1_12169__10651

This is currently my dilemma!! I am in love with the white dinner jacket idea but the lady at mens wearhouse said that it would look weird with the black tuxes on the groomsmen… I personally didn’t think so but she kinda put a damper on my idea 🙁 Do you have any pictures??? I would love to see them!! Thank you 🙂

Thanks! Does anyone have any opinions on the bow tie compared to the tie? Typically with the white dinner jacket you usually wear a bow tie. Fiance doesn’t really like the look… do you think it would be okay with a black regular tie? I think that if Fiance wears a bowtie then all the groomsmen should also be wearing a bowtie… I kinda think that aspect should match between the Fiance and Groomsmen… thoughts?
