Ok so my dilemma is this: I have crazy, super thick hair and the updos I like.. I dont think would stay in my hair all night (based on previous experiences)
I have a cathedral length drop veil that I will be wearing for the ceremony and then switching to a birdcage veil for the reception.. I was thinking about wearing my hair down, but I think with the longer veil.. I really need an updo
I like the elaborate pretty updos like these:
but I think my hair is too thick for it and it will end up falling down, especially if I dance, which I plan on doing SO this leads me to my other option the never fails, but slightly boring, classic “bun” like these:
So my question is.. should I settle for a pretty and classic bun? or switch to a down style for the reception?
Or do any of you have other suggestions that would work with my hair and veil choices?

i really recommend getting a hair trial for the updo that you love. get it early in the morning and then jump around all day and see how it turns out… a million bobby pins put in by an expert may be what you need!

I plan on doing one, but I’m also afraid that it will be noticable that I have 150+ bobby pins in my hair and my budget doesn’t allow for an expensive updo so I’m trying to get ideas before I go! 🙂

I have crazy thick hair too (like enough for 3 people) and I have had up-dos before that were just fine. There will be a lot of hairspray involved but I think you will be fine! Also, gross as this sounds, don’t wash it before you go. Dirty hair stays better.

@elliestan: Agreed! I had about a million pins in my super-long, thick hair and it didn’t budge all day.
OP – I had a simple side bun with a fascinator to hide some of the pins. What my stylist did was make a mini ponytail to use up some of the hair and then wove the rest of my hair around it to create a bun. So basically, I had a bun inside a bun! It worked fabulously.

My updo had 69 bobby pins in it (yes, I counted them that night because I couldn’t believe after the first few dozen that I was still pulling more out) and it stayed perfectly from 9:30 in the morning until 11 at night. At the time my hair measured two feet long, and, as my hairstylist will gladly tell you, even a Wookie would consider my hair thick.
Take a morning and go for a trial of one of those elaborate pretty updos, and don’t get out of the chair until you can shake your head like a wet dog and nothing moves. Then see how long it stays in for the rest of the day. You’ll have your answer on whether it will work.
