I was just wondering what kinds of fun hobbies and activities everyone does that help them cope with the stress of “waiting” (as well as other life stress, of course!). I am a distance runner, did my first half marathon last month and am going to start training for my first full marathon in May very soon! I am just getting over being sick so I missed several days of running/working out which drove me nuts and made the waiting anxiety flare up! I am also interested in obstacle racing, I did a spartan beast with my SO and friends in August and loved it!! I also love animals- I am lucky to live in a beautiful area with lots of wildlife and marine life, which serve as a nice distraction! What about all you?

@DrD711: Hello Newbee! I’m not sure if I had welcomed you to the hive yet!
Running is a great way to help pass the time while waiting, and healty too!
I posted some of my ideas under ‘Who’s NOT likely getting a holiday proposal’, so they are here:

@SomedaymrsWDS: +1 a woman after my own heart lol.
I’m in my first year of grad school so I have that to keep me busy, and over my winter break I am going to make a list of things i want to do before i get engaged, and stop moping around so much! lol.

@DrD711: This is going to sound super vain but I’ve been paying more attention to working on my outward appearance lol.
I’ve always been the type to wear very little makeup and rarely have painted nails. Now I occupy my time moisturizing, doing my hair, doing my nails, clearing up my skin, and toning up my body so when I DO get engaged I’ll be all ready for photos! haha
It also gives me something else to look at on Pinterest besides wedding stuff.
Wow that sounded so vain. Sorry guys lol

@DrD711: Wow, congrats on the half marathon! That is a half marathon more than what I could do! lol
Agree though about keeping busy..there is nothing like doing nothing that causes that pesky waiting itch to creep out of nowhere!
I live in Vancouver, British Columbia so I’m lucky that we have mountains and the ocean right here to keep me very busy! But we tend to get about 8 months of rain a year (ugh!) so that also means a lot of indoor time for this girl! You’d be amazed at how much stuff I do indoors to keep my mind busy (I tend to paint my nails a lot this time of the year to say the least)
I find reading a book really takes my mind off everything. And exercise! Takes a lot of focus and it makes you feel 100X better in the process!

I should be studying for exams…
Oh and I joined a gym. That’s a good distraction

@DrD711: I am helping to host a friend’s baby shower and have been reading tutorials on how to make a Diaper Cake! 😀 I love crafting so I am happy to have any excuse to do it. LOL! Going to start tonight!

@DrD711: I’m impressed by all of your running! I wish I could get into it…anyway, I like baking, reading, crafting, traveling, animals, spending time with friends and family, etc. I just wanted to suggest you maybe not think of it as things to “distract” you while “waiting,” because what will you do when the engagement and wedding are over and there isn’t anything else to “wait” for? After I got married I kept feeling a sort of void because I didn’t have some big event that time was leading up to, and it felt strange. My husband pointed out that there isn’t always going to be something big planned for the near future, and that we should just enjoy the every day stuff, too. Sorry to get off topic, but realizing that made me feel a lot better, and I hope it’ll help you a little as you wait for an engagement and wedding planning 🙂

@DrD711: Sweet! Haha I made a thread a few days ago about working out while waiting as a distraction: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/while-you-wait-are-you#axzz2meLAJZBR.
I wish I were as good a runner as you! Only 5k’s for me so far and going to the gym 4/5x a week!

Yoga! It’s utterly calming and relaxing. However, my studio recently changed their schedule, and my favorite class was canceled, and so now I don’t know when I’ll be able to go, boo 🙁

Spin classes are a huge hobby of mine! I also love shopping (even though I rarely get to go), and I love a good glass of wine with my girls.

Thanks for all the replies!! I was hoping I’d meet some fellow runners/gym junkies… exercise is the best! I love yoga too. And, I must agree with everyone who mentioned wine!

@GracieGirl11: I totally agree about it being more than a distraction! Running is a huge part of who I am, so it’s nice to know all the work I put into it now will continue to help me down the road. I’m training for a full marathon now, I hope to one day to an ultra and do many more obstacle races! I need a crafty/artistic hobby too..I’m leaning towards wildlife photography but I don’t have a camera yet!
