I feel for you, I used to suffer terribly with cystitis early in my relationship with my Fi, it became something I was dealing with monthly, and I just couldn’t seem to keep it at bay (excuse me for not wanting to decline a session 😉 )
Go to a good chemist and get some sodium citrate water tablets. Don’t buy the rubbish over the counter stuff. They are usually in a silver tube and they became a lifesaver for me. I actually used to carry them in my bag at all time to avoid being without help during an attack.
The othe things I found to help were:
1) Washing before sex and peeing after
2) Dont wash “down there” with any thing soapy, your body can clean itself.
3) Lube up. Dryer sex makes you more prone to irritation
4) Hot water bottles and bath water like pp have said really does relieve you like nothing else
5) Drink copious amounts of water, it’s the last thing you want to do but flushing your system out is just what you need to do.
Hope the anti’s kick in and you can get back to having fun 🙂

Ah thank you ladies for the help!
Yea, antibiotics have definitely kicked in. My fear of peeing has gone (yippeeeee). Two more days and I’m done with the course 🙂 Thank you Alexander Fleming for penicillin and thank science for antibiotics! Cannot say that enough
I’ve learnt to add ‘peeing without pain or discomfort’ to my list of things to NOT take for granted. That, and antibiotics and toilet paper.
And for the bee who suggested lube – definitely no need for lube, there is enough of the natural stuff as it is lol ;)But I think my vagina got a little irritated from the copious amounts of sex. I don’t really notice it until afterwards, when all the sexy time stops…
But yes, now I know what to do for the next time (hopefully there won’t BE a next time, I’ll be taking a bunch of precautions!). I’m like the other Bee, I can’t say no to a session haha, so just have to take precautions definitely.
No fun for a few days at least, it’s ‘lady time’ (thank goodness, I thought the antibiotics and whatnot had disrupted it! Was getting a little worried, but I’m happy now)
I don’t think I would wish a UTI on my worst enemy to be honest, awful awful awful… Now that the UTI is dealt with, tomorrow is time for blood tests for my neuro symptoms (I swear my body is just rebelling against me lol)

Cranberry juice (NOT cocktail) or “cranberry tablets”, yohgurt, probiotics, urinating after sex, etc. are all ways to prevent a UTI or help to treat it, but once you have one you should definitely go to a Dr. to get antibiotics. If your GP won’t return your calls I’d go to a clinic. The sooner you start the meds the shorter you have to be on them & the faster the infection will go away!
ETA: You’re on penicillin? Interesting! : ) Around here the antibiotic of choice for UTIs is Cipro.

I think I got a UTI right before I went on vacation last week. So while I was away from home I was drinking a great deal of Just Cranberry juice (organic, no sugar added, about $7 a bottle! ack!) and that helped. Then my cousin told me to try cranberry supplement pills. I got them at Whole Foods Mkt for $15 or so…. way cheaper than buying all those bottles of cranberry juice and far fewer calories for sure.
I am pretty sure my UTI is gone now but I’m going to the ob-gyn for my annual exam in a couple of weeks so I’ll find out for sure then. In the meantime I’m still taking two cranberry supplements a day to be on the safe side.

UTI’s are horrid, I just got over one. Now I’m taking cranberry and vit C supplements to ward off the next one.

@Jenniphyr: Oh no, I was on amoxclav (clavulanic acid and amoxycillin) haha. I just appreciate the discovery of the major antibiotic and the other ‘off-shoots’ that developed from it!
@Andr0meda: Will definitely look into those cranberry supplements, I might see if I can order some from online… I already take enough pills as it is, why not add some more to the mix lol
@SoupyCat: Thing with vitamin C is that if you take too much, it can lead to kidney stone formation. Which is why I am very careful with the amount I take. And if I ever ‘double dose’, I only do so for a day or two, I try to avoid taking too much.

I totally know what you’re going through. When my SO and I first started sleeping together, I got 2 UTI’s in the first 2 months. I was always really lazy about getting out of bed and peeing after, but after going through all the BS that goes with having a UTI, I now gladly sprint to the bathroom after every time. I also take cranberry pills everyday, even if I don’t feel like I’m getting one. They have vitamin C in them as well, so it’s basically just like taking vitamins everyday.
Here’s a tip I read on a different message board. This is very weird, but it actually worked. I read that if you think you are getting a UTI, drink at least 10 glasses of water, and instead of sitting like you normally would, turn around and face the back of the toilet when you go. It apparently makes it easier to empty your bladder, and I tried it out of desperation of not wanting to go to a doctor a third time. I did this at the very first twinge of pain and managed to catch it before it got worse and it went away. Has anyone else heard of this?

I really think you should see a doctor when you can, give them a urine sample and get advice from a professional….. you were peeing blood…..

@OrchidsandCandles: Good to know. My cranberry supplements actually have vit C added in it. But it’s not a huge amount.

I do not think it hurts not to pee before sex in fact sex a bit full is more zingy as long as you empty after sometimes you get an after gasm as you empty after to make it worth the getting out of warm bed
