I now have a proposal story to post!
My Fiance (soooo weird to type that!) managed to completely surprise me last weekend!
The proposal: My Fiance works every other weekend, and I have been working every weekend so needless to say, weekends are very precious to us. My Fiance was off this weekend so we had plans to just relax and go out to dinner Saturday night. On Thursday, I got a call from one of my friends asking if we were free Saturday night as she wanted to celebrate her husband’s birthday early since he had to go out of town for work (my friends and I all still celebrate birthdays by going to dinner). I was a bit disappointed as I wanted it to be just us, so I asked my Fiance about it, and he said we should go. He said we can duck out early and still have our romantic evening, so I agreed that we would go. Plus, it was at a restaurant that I remember us going to on one of our early dates, so I was excited to go there again.
We spend that morning taking one last look at the house that we are buying (our offer was accepted last week!) and went for a bike ride since it was a warm day. My Fiance acted completely normal – I honestly had no inclination about what was coming up. A little backstory: my Fiance said he would propose sometime after his sister’s wedding, which was Labor Day weekend. We looked at rings a few months ago but I didn’t know if he had purchased one; he wanted to have the final say and kept telling me to trust him.
Long story short, we were to meet my friends at a restaurant downtown so I made sure I looked nice. As we were driving, my friend texted me that she got the reservation time wrong, and the reservation was 1/2 later than what she originally told us. Since we had some time to kill, my Fiance suggested we walk to the lakefront, which was not too far away. I still had no clue at this point.
It was a beautiful night and near sunset and I commented on how early the sun was setting these days. For such a nice night, we were actually by ourselves on the lakefront, except for a couple sitting on a bench about 50 feet away from us. Out of nowhere, my Fiance said “I know you’ve been waiting for this” then went down on one knee and started saying all these really nice things that I cannot remember! I just kept saying “OMG is this happening????” I couldn’t believe how cool he was! He obviously had rehearsed his speech a lot! I stood there for a second as I didn’t hear him say “will you marry me?” He looked at me, waiting for me to answer, and I said “what?” Then he got nervous and said “I just asked you to marry me and you haven’t answered”. I screamed YES! and almost knocked him over as he was standing up. He gave me a huge hug and spun me around several times. It was then I noticed the couple on the bench was right next to us – it was another of my friends with her camera! Her husband took pictures of the actual proposal as she was sitting there crying! She was so happy for us!
As we were all walking to the restaurant I felt bad that we were stealing the thunder from my friend’s birthday and I kept saying things like, “should we tell everyone?” My Fiance kept laughing and saying “of course we should!”. We were led to a back corner where a ton of our friends were and as we walked up everyone said “Congratulations!” It was then that I finally realized that this was not for my friend’s birthday. All these people were here for us! I started to tear up a bit as it all started to settle on me. It was a very overwhelming moment. We did not leave early but did have our own romantic night afterwards. I asked him how he remained so calm and said he was shaking inside! He said he has to put on the calm face for a living but he was shocked that I didn’t see how nervous he was.
The ring: So as I stated earlier, he wanted to have the final say on my ring. I was supposed to narrow it down to 3 styles, which I had a lot of difficuty doing. I had probably 100 rings pinned on my Pinterest page. I was convinced that he was going to get me a solitaire as that’s what his favorite style was. I was shocked that he picked out a split shank round halo! I had pinned a picture from a Bee that no longer posts here and tried on a smaller version at Costco of all places. He had to order the setting specifically for this diamond and it took 8 weeks to come in! He went into great detail about how it sits low so it won’t get caught on everything and how my face would light up every time I tried a halo setting on, so he knew he had to get me a halo. He was so proud of his choice and gladly showed off my ring to anyone that asked.
I believe the center is 1.8 carats and the total weight is a little less than 2.5 carats. I feel it photographs much larger than it looks in real life.
So enough of my jabbering; I know you just want the pictures of the ring.
Edit: Ugh! Trying to resize the picture.
