It depends on the quality, what you receive, and the location.  We paid $4,400 for 8 hours of coverage with an engagement session, DVDs for both, and a book made from our wedding pictures.  Our photographer was in Colorado.

PS – Maybe you should add a poll?

I am in central Illinois-here I have seen packages from 900.00-2000.00 on average I think it is about 1500.00 here, and most photographers will throw in the engagement photos free with the wedding booking.

my photographer charges $2500 for her basic package – which was up to 8 hours of coverage and all the pictures edited on DVD with full printing rights.  then there are other packages with extra photo shoots and albums.

from the research i did, i would say the “average” is in the $2000 range.  which means you find some lower in the $1000 range (but they are probably not as good), and some much higher as well.  and of course, it depends on the package you want.

It really depends on where you live I think. We are paying $1500 for 10 hours, 2 wedding albums, cd copies, engagement shoot and 100 thank you cards and a bunch of prints.

It really depends.  Photographers charge what people are willing to pay.  If they book up solid for the season a year in advance, they probably are not charging enough and will increase their prices.  Newbies breaking into the market are charging less because they have to in order to get business.

It also depends on what you are getting, hours of coverage, prints, albums, etc or some just do a shoot and burn and give you a CD.

Some photographers are front end loaded and give you a CD of images.  Some photographers are back end loaded and charge a lower fee to shoot the day and supply a proofing site, but then count on selling the CD, prints, albums, to make up the rest.  It’s really hard to compare prices.

In NJ, average prices for basic coverage would be around 2700-3500, higher end photographers or more elaborate packages would be 5K +.  There are some pro’s that offer basic services for around 2300-2400, and most of the newbie “pro’s” are the ones charging under 2K.

We paid $680 and recieved a disc with 80 photos on it, a photo album with 60 prints, and 3 hrs of photo time. The photographer was less than great and I honeslty wish we would have invested more money in a better photographer.

You might want to post this on a “local” board. It really varies depending on where you are!

@Keltaena: Totally agree. This question is so dependent on location, and also what is included in your package.

I think it depends on the area, the average we saw around here was $2500 for about 8 hours of coverage. We are paying $710 (booked right before the rates went up to closer to $1000) for just 5 hours of coverage. Our photographer has packages that go up to $6000+! We are on a tight budget and decided we would rather have fewer higher quality shots and we are going to DIY an album.

ETA: Our package did not include bridal or engagement photos, and we are just getting a CD of the edited images

In Boston, a good photographer that is well established will probably set you bact $2700++. We paid $5500 to fly out a Boston photog to San Diego for our wedding. She was in her 2nd season…her prices are now much higher. (her package back then would have cost around $3500 without being flown out, to give you an idea). That was par for the course for all the photogs I contacted that were the skill level and style I wanted. You can go cheaper if you are willing to sacrifice experience or skill level.
