So I’m a long time lurker, and I promised myself that I would wait till I was engaged to join… but after looking through so many posts, and seeing how helpful you ladies can be, I decided I could totally use some fresh opinions. π
My Boyfriend or Best Friend just recently started talking about getting engaged, and although he’s always known that I have very little interest in having a diamond engagement ring, simply because they’re just not my style… he didn’t really know where to start other than that (and quite frankly, I wasn’t entirely sure either) so he decided that we’d pick out a ring together. After a few days, we discovered mystic topaz, and decided it was perfect. But… now, we’ve found two rings that have a few slight differences, and neither of us can fully decide between the two… =P
The first one has a 1.6 carat center stone, with white sapphire sidestones and the tcw is 2.45. The Boyfriend or Best Friend prefers this one because it’s a bit more “engagement ring-y” than the other, and he likes the idea of a slightly bigger stone. π I worry that it’s a little big for me (although I do wear a size 7, so that might help balance it,) because I don’t wear a ton of jewlery, and it’s such a noticable stone that I don’t think it needs that extra size to be impressive. I really do like the extra sparkle from the sidestones, though.

The second one has a 1 carat center stone, and has two little white topaz bezel sidestones, and a total ctw of 1.69. I feel like it fits my style a tad bit more, and I have no worries about the size of the center stone. I feel like the setting itself is a bit more unique and interesting, but I do agree with the Boyfriend or Best Friend about it not being as “engagement ring-y.”

I really am torn between the the two. I know they’re both pretty similar, but there’s enough differences to make it a hard decision. Which do you ladies prefer? Should I go for the one that seems more like an engagement ring? Or should I go for the one that seems a bit more like my style? Any and all opinions would be appreciated! π

I think you should pick the one that’s more your style. It looks plenty engagement ringy to me.

@GizmoQT1: Why thank you! It’s called mystic fire topaz. It’s basically a natural white topaz with a thin layer of titanium on the bottom, which changes how the light is refracted, and creates all those stunning colors. π
@Jabberwocky: I think the only reason why we’re seeing the first one as more engagement ring is the fact that has that extra sparkle from the white sapphires, whereas the smaller one still has sparkle, just not as much. I think I’m just programed to expect big sparkly things on engagement rings, but in hindsight I know my engagement ring should be whatever the heck I want it to be. xD Thanks for posting!

I like the second one, very pretty, more subtle and delicate, and definately better to go with something which is more your style, it is your ring after all! That topaz is stunning too, so you are definately right that it doesnt need the extra size to look impressive.

I prefer the second one. I think with such a funky center stone (which I love btw) you run the risk of it looking like costume jewelry the bigger you go. I also think the second one really lets the topaz shine. Plus, you said it yourself, it’s more your style.

They are both pretty but I prefer the first one. The claws on the 2nd one look a bit chunky for such a pretty delicate ring…

I just took the poll to 50/50, sorry! Haha. But I prefer the delicate nature of the second. I honk the centre stone stands out more too.

@Aennie: I don’t think you can go wrong with either but I think #2 seems plenty engagementy and I think you’d be more comfortable wearing it. Plus it’s gorgeous!

@Aennie: I love that stone! I’ve actually never seen a mystic fire topaz before, and it’s so pretty and unique.
My vote goes for ring #2. You said it was more your style, which is the most important thing. Aside from that, I think it’s more visually interesting than ring #1, and I love that it’s so dainty.
Good luck choosing, and welcome to the Bee!

I think you should get the 1st one. Just because of shrinkage, which I unfortuatly have with my 1.35 carat diamond right now. Leaves me wishing I had gone bigger at times.
