@MsW-to-MrsM:  An unborn child (to a certain point in the pregnancy) can not survive without the mother. Much like a parasite can not survive without its host. And yet, many use medical intervention to get rid of the parasite when it is life threatening to its host. I respect your view, I really do, but there are people in this world that don’t believe exactly what you believe. All I am saying is that laws should not be enacted to restrict other people from options just because you don’t believe in it.

@MrsVandykins:  +1 and I love that quote! I’ve never understood how Republicans justify their belief that nobody should ever be a single mother or recieve government aid like food stamps, but we should also ban abortions, birth control and sex education in schools. I mean WUT?!

I am probably the opposite of majority of the women on this thread, a prolife conservative woman living in the northeast (yes, we do exist lol), and no, being conservative does not make me rich, a racist, or a bible thumping catholic/christian as many liberals make us out to be. While I am prolife, when it comes to instances of rape/life of the mother I understand and see the reasoning and really feel for these women. I do not believe in it as a form of birth control.

While abortion is legal, since it is happening I will agree that these surgeons should be certified to make sure these women are kept safe and in a healthy environment. However, even 20 weeks is pretty far along for an abortion to occur under other circumstances.

If this woman was speaking more eloquently, I would hold a lot more respect for her. I went through this entire election hearing about the war on women, which honestly its such a crock (sorry, but it is). I’ve never been turned away from birth control in my life, that election took extremely cheap shots at Romney.

As for the death penatly argument…for the people who have been convicted of murder and were sentenced to death by a jury beyond reasonable doubt, I have no sympathy. You made your choice to end another person’s life in a cruel manner, an unborn child never even gets the chance to defend itself.

The GOP in TX believes in small govt… so small it fits inside of and controls your uterus.

@Mrs.LloydDobler:  56,000,000 is a number that does not imply women are having great difficulty in their ability to choose abortion. That’s my biggest issue. I never said out-right ban. It’s the sheer number of abortions out there. Something is very, very wrong with this whole picture.

A lot of Pro-lifers are pro-life because they believe a person has a soul at conception.  Given that point of view, it’s understandable that they’d equate abortion with murder.  Here’s, the thing, though: there’s no evidence that a soul exists.  The soul is a belief, just like religion, just like god.  An unsubstantiated belief should never be grounds for laws that govern a woman’s rights.

From a scientific, verifiable standpoint, the sense of self is all based on brain function.  A zygote does not have a functioning brain.  There are points of human development where the embryo has the same level of brain development and is pretty much indistinguishable from an embryonic fish or a chicken.  Yet most of us are ok with eating fish and chicken.  I can understand the opposition to late-term abortions when the fetus is viable and it has a developed brain.  If that was all pro-lifers were going after, we’d have a different situation here.  The problem is many of these legislators have the ultimate goal of chipping away at abortion laws until abortions are no longer attainable.

@SoonToBeMrsD921:  I agree about birth control being easily accessible. The problem is getting people to use it properly. I don’t believe education/access is the whole story with improper BC use. I said in my above post that I did not have sex ed and did not have money growing up. It never stopped me.

I have always been pro-life, and always will be. I saw my baby’s heartbeating at 7 weeks; it’s not just a clump of cells. It’s a tiny human. At 12 weeks it looks like a normal baby. At 22 weeks if can live outside of it’s mother.

Being pregnant has only made me more pro-life. It’s not just a women’s body. It’s the child inside of her as well. That child deserves to live.

@MsW-to-MrsM:  Yeah, it’s horrifying to me that you can get an abortion at 20 weeks.

I was starting to be theoretically okay with abortion (there are drug addicts and 15 year olds and victims of rape out there), and then I got pregnant and discovered that your baby has a heartbeat at 6 weeks.

While there may be some, like the promiscuous friend you mentioned, who find it an easy decision to make, I believe this is one of the hardest decisions to make, if you are a woman struggling with an unwanted pregnancy. The fact that abortion is an option frequently chosen does not make it an easy choice to make, and it’s unfair to insinuate otherwise.  Roughly one million people a year undergo chemotherapy; it is a frequently chosen option, to be sure, but that does not make it an easy choice for most.  Do not take the fact that the option was taken as evidence that the decision was easy.

I really wish conservatives would stop trying to tell women what to do with their bodies.  Get OUT.  Instead, why not focus your attention on pregnancy prevention??  Better sex education, more access to birth control, teaching people how to use birth control more effectively, etc etc etc.  And then, when kids are born, maybe make their lives a bit easier, huh?  Let’s improve preschool, Kindergarten, and elementary schools.  Let’s actually care about the whole person rather than the fetus before it’s born.

@MsW-to-MrsM:  She got escorted out when she was calling out specific people for their misdeeds- she first addressed that their expert on reproductive health was actually an opthamolagist, then started saying something about another person and that’s when they pulled her away from the mic.
