I’m currently struggling with my dream of pursuing graduate school and also facing a lot of debt when I get out in a field that possible won’t pay to well. I have a lot of debt from my undergraduate, as my parents didn’t help me with tuition and because of how much my dad made they still looked at his salary and the government wouldn’t give me very much so I had to take out private loans. I have about 35k in private loans and 30k in government. Rounding it off, around 70k all together.
My absolute dream since I started college has been to go into counseling. I think it’s an interesting career, I feel that is flexible depending where you work, and it’s diverse. However, I’ve always been told it doesn’t pay much. The graduate program I applied to is 40k. Once you’re in though, there are options (grants and assistaships) that can drastically cut tuition down to less than half that amount.
My husband is debt free school wise and has been working in his field for several years. He makes about 60k a year and has been supporting us primarily while I work part time going to school (I bring in about 12k a year part time). He is 100% supportive of me going on to a graduate program and getting my schooling done with. His oppinion is that he makes enough to supoort us for now and if we continue doing it things the way we have, after I grauate with my master’s for two or three years we will just continue to live off his salary and dump my income into paying off the loans in chunks. That way we can pay it off early or at least down to a more manageable amout.
My question is, I see a lot of different averages for what a counselor makes. I’m based in Ohio. One website tells me 26k is average, but of the jobs I see hiring are around 35-45k starting out. Other websites tell me the median (after a bout 5 years or so) is more like 55k-65k. So my question is, for those that are comfortable sharing, how much o you make a counselor (with just a Master’s degree) and is our thinking reasonable for this career?
Thanks in advance!
