I bought my dress on ebay for a little over $200 (it originally retailed for $4,500!) and I’m so glad I did. It fit perfectly I felt beautiful. I don’t regret it for a second, buying used allowed me to get a much nicer dress (silk instead of sythetic material, beautiful lace…) than I would have been able to get if I bought something brand new.

The only thing that was my mom was a bit disappointed. I think she envisioned having a “say yes to the dress” experience. If you can, I recommend trying to create other special time with your monther in law. Can you pick out accessories together? Can she help you find the perfect necklace or pair of shoes? Weddings are big events for moms and I think some of the dress shopping ritual helps them to process it all.

It never occurred to me to buy a used dress, but now I absolutely love the idea and am planning to buy used. As long as it fits me and doesn’t look obviously worn, I don’t see the reason of spending all that money in buying it new. Weddings are so horribly overpriced as it is, might as well use that dress money for a down payment on a house. ;)
I read another post saying that it’s bad luck for Chinese brides to buy used wedding gowns. I’m full Chinese and I haven’t heard of this superstition, but I’m not surprised. I’m still buying a used dress anyway. 😉

My dress is a sample, so it’s not used in the sense that another bride wore it on her day, but used in the sense that it was tried on by probably hundreds of brides during their search for ‘the dress’.
It doesn’t make it any less ‘your’ dress if it belonged to someone else before.
My car was used, and it doesn’t make it any less special. It’s still my car.

I think it’s super smart to buy a used wedding dress. You can get more quality for less bucks, so what’s not to like?!
However… I’m super peculiar with things like that. I don’t even like buying used books because I just LOVE the feeling of being the first one to open and read a book. Hence I didn’t even think about getting a used dress. I want the feeling of trying on dresses in a bridal salon and hopefully finding exactly the one I have always dreamed of. It may be a little irrational to spend more money just to get this feeling, but this may be the one time in my life where I’ll allow myself to be completely irrational and spend a fortune on something I could have had for less. 😉

My dress is a used dress 🙂 I haven’t gotten married yet but it was such a bargain I had to get it. I paid anlittle over $100 for the dress and shipping from the US to Sweden and the dress ahd been dry cleaned. It was in perfect condition 🙂
I had already set my budget for my dress at under 150, I would honesyly feel stupid spending more than that on a dressn 😛

Just a few days behind but I did end up buying a used dress 🙂
I bought a used Maggie Sottero Lorie. It’s in great condition and fits so I don’t think I will need a lot of alterations.

I got a sample wedding dress from bridepower.com and I love it, it was new with tags, all of it’s beading intact and in perfect shape. Who’s really going to know if it’s used or not so long as it’s clean and in good condition? Personally, I wouldn’t care. I’m buying my second dress for my reception off ebay and I’m proud of it.

I always thought no way in hell, but ive become more open to it..i mean if you can find a dress you fall in love with and its a great price why not! People are always going to have an opinion, no matter what you do. So, do whatever you want 🙂

I would buy one if I could find the one I want in my size for the right price. if they are selling it used for $900 and it’s $1100 in store then I might as well buy a new one lol. David’s Bridal offers a credit card.
PS it is your call but I think telling her you don’t accept her offer was rude. She was basically saying that she considered you her daughter and wanted to show you love, it wasn’t costing you anything. I think you just got miffed when you thought secondhand wasn’t good enough for her. Still she is offering to help you guys and you told her no you aren’t getting anything for our wedding we don’t want your help. Sorry if I took it the wrong way but i think it could have been handled in a much nicer way. Kind of made me sad for your Future Mother-In-Law.
But like I said there’s nothing wrong with a used dress but I would make sure it was still in good shape and make sure you find out what alterations were made before you buy, if they can be reversed, ect. There are beautiful dresses that can certainly be worn more than once if well preserved.

I so no reason to pay full price if it can be reasonable avoided. I would be a used dress, ring just about anything wedding related.
