Lcturner3:  that is a beautiful ring, and I think rose gold would compliment it really well!

Lcturner3:  can you post a side view of the ring?  I feel like most of the time when I’m looking at my ring during the day, I see it from the side profile — so if there is enough metal from the side, it might be worth it! 🙂

Lcturner3:  Oooooh! Beautiful ring! I have a fairly large oval-shaped smoky quartz that my mom gave me. It’s set in a sterling silver setting that is way too small for any of my fingers. I hope to get it set in a rose gold setting one of these days. I think rose gold with the brown tones looks so, so pretty.

Here is a pic of my stone in its current setting. (Not the best picture, sadly.)

The ring part is so tiny (compared to my giant ring size — LOL), and it also has a sizing bar in it to make it even smaller! When she gave it to me, my mom was like, “Oh, you should wear it on your pinky.” Yeah — right! I would look ridiculous with this honkin’ thing on my pinky! Ha, ha.

It is a really pretty stone, though. And easily 30-40 years old. Maybe even older, as my mom has had it at least that long. It was a gift to her from one of my aunts.

I would love to find a rose gold setting for it that has some kind of detail on the basket, although no other stones. At least, that’s where I’m at, mentally, at the moment.

I was all ready to say no because I had a picture of a warmer smoky quartz stone in my mind, but that is a beautiful deep chocolate color. I think it would look incredible in rose gold.

While I think RG would look stunning with your ring, unfortunately I believe that RG plating does not hold up the way rhodium does. RG is typically an alloy of copper that is added to gold to make it look pink, it’s not a coating. Gold plating typically wears off so fast, I’m afraid it just won’t be durable enough to hold up.

Lcturner3:  Thanks! I was super excited when my mom told me she didn’t want it any more and that I could have it. I jumped at the chance. My mom’s birthday is in November, and my aunt gave it to her back when people called smoky quartz “Smoky Topaz”. Because topaz is her birthstone.

I think the stone is in pretty good shape, particularly for its age. My mom hardly ever wore it, and she kept it wrapped up in her jewelry box. Once I get it reset and (hopefully) wear it more often, I wonder how well it will hold up. I will have to learn to be careful with it, which may be a challenge for me. It seems I tend to be hard on my rings. >.O
