People won’t pay attention, in my experience. Make it clear on the RSVP card how many seats are reserved for them. You’ll save yourself the headache when you’re second cousin wants to invite her 4 adult kids.

@Shkragoldfish: For people in my circle, if you’re having a wedding that limits your seating, it’s necessary. It’s what everyone does around here, for the most part.  That’s not to say that it is always adhered to by guests, but at least the bride tried!

Other. It is not just “a good idea”, it is the bare minimum of personalization required on a proper invitation to a social event. Even better is using the older form of write-in names on the invitation itself. Begrudging your guests the minimum amount of effort it takes to actually address them by their social names on the note you are sending them(!) seems hardly consistent with a hostess’s duty of care to her guests.

However, if you really do think of addressing people by name as “unnecessary extra work”, then take the spreadsheet you did your guest-list in, and use it to source a mail-merge document that automatically formats each guest’s name into the body of the invitation using the classical wording, and you will have saved yourself all that “extra work” without shirking on basic good manners.
