hi bees. okay, so my FH and I know about 4 couples who have been to the riviera maya within the past five years and loved it! had a great time!! FH really wants to go there & after researching it so do I! However we are also hearing a lot of opinions about how unsafe it is even at the resorts & drinks being drugged, people kidnapped. I found a website dedicated to mexican vacation horror stories and they freak me out!! somehow though, I feel we are meant to go there and that everythign will be beautiful and wonderful for us. Right now it’s between Riviera Maya and Jamaica. We want to go somewhere that offers more than just beach activities & somewhere we both havent been. What are your thoughts on Mexico????? 🙂
here is that scary website: http://www.mexicovacationawareness.com/mexicostory.html

We went to the El Doradao Royale in Riviera Maya in April and it was AMAZING!! I did not feel unsafe at all! We did all inclusive so we only left the resort once to go to Playa del Carmen for the afternoon but even there I felt safe. The resort we stayed at was awesome and I would go back in a heart beat!!!

Ive been 5 times 15 years. Stick to the east coast and you will be fine. If you leave the resort for a long haul trip, only do it on legit guided tour. Like any area in any country, just be smart. There’s crime everywhere, including jamaica too.

We had our destination wedding/honeymoon in Playa del Carmen (The Royal) and had an AMAZING time. Our resort was in the middle of downtown Playa and we walked around Fifth Ave all the time and never once felt unsafe.
They keep the resort/touristy areas safe to make sure people still visit. The areas depend on the tourism money.

My fiance and I are also planning to take our honeymoon in Riviera Maya at the Iberostar (adults only) resort. I’ve been to to Playa and Riviera each one time and never felt unsafe. 5th Ave. in Playa is a great place for shopping and although you have to deal with the normal people bugging you to come in there store, I didn’t feel unsafe at all. Riviera is BEAUTIFUL and if you feel uneasy at all, just stay in the resort…there’s really no need to leave anyway!

We have been to Mexico 3 times in the past 3 years. I highly recommend going to Puerto Vallarta (west coast), and do NOT recommend going to Cancun. Not because of safety reasons, but because Cancun is so touristy. Puerto Vallarta is a beautiful city. I cna’t wait to go back. Have fun on your honeymoon!!

@sarahbeth_: i went to playa del carmen last summer. *LOVED* it. I also stayed at the Royal as a PP. There’s 3 down there.. one in the middle of town, and two neighboring right on the beach: one for families, one for adults. We stayed at adults only on the beach. It was *U N R E A L*. SO’s parents have a time share, which is why we went. They travel everywhere tropical and blow tons of $$ on it, and this is their favorite place they’ve ever been. The service was unbelievable (for ex: the cleaning woman would surprisingly fill our in-room jacuzzi up with bubbles and rose petals and light candles while we were at dinner! who does that!), the food was delicious and nonstop, and the place/beach was drop dead gorgeous. I easily consider that one of the best weeks of my life! LOL! omg i want to go again. i have a little feeling/hope that the parents will offer us the timeshare for our honeymoon, and I will say YES in a second flat!!!
ETA: oh yeah safety! it’s not some crazy town. the shopping area is actually super high end for blocks. It’s very busy with locals and tourists, you’re not like the one obvious tourist on this rundown poor strip just looking like a target. We got approached by ppl trying to offer us drugs (though SO’s parents did not) and a simple No Thanks sufficed. That also happens in US tourist beach towns or anywhere really. I felt totally safe the whole time, and travelled through out the town both in the day and night.

I’ve been to Playa Del Carmen and it was great! Very safe! there were police and army officials walking around as well. The shopping district is not targeted towards locals and there is lots of tourists everywhere so it was great! Very safe there! It wasn’t run down either, kept up very well.

I’ve been to Playa del Carmen and felt much safer there then when we went to Jamaica. We are planning on staying at the Excellence in Riveria Maya for our honeymoon! FH was also very worried about safety but our travel agent reassured him that they have never had any problems there.

We stayed at Excellence Playa Mujeres for our honeymoon and thought it was wonderful. I’ve been to Mexico 4 or 5 other times, mostly on cruise excursions, and have never had a problem. But I tend to do a lot of research beforehand regarding transportation, reputable companies to book excursions with, and potentially sketchy areas. Plus we don’t stray too far off the beaten path, just by the nature of our excursions. 🙂
I’ve also vacationed in Jamaica, the DR, and the Bahamas, and made cruise stops in most of the ports in the western Caribbean and never felt unsafe. You just have to be realistic and smart about what you’re doing. You can find websites dedicated to any sort of horror stories if you put your mind to it.

@MrsN14: thanks for your input 🙂 what was it about jamaica that made you feel less safe?
