Here’s the scoop:
The latest my ceremony can start is 430 PM.
The earliest my reception venue can start set up is at 5PM.
With that being said, the ceremony would be over at 5:15, people will leave and linger for 15 minutes and there is a 30 minute drive to the reception venue putting them there at 6 PM. Our venue has an outdoor area for a cocktail hour, but the wedding is in November, so it could be cold or raining.
The reception is going to start at 7 to leave time for setup and pictures. That leaves people idle for one hour. IF we are able to have the cocktail hour outside.. GREAT! If not, people will be idle for hour, because there is not room in the venue for a cocktail hour inside. The invitation will clearly state that the reception starts at 7, but should we include something for them to do for the hour or just leave them to freshen up, get gas, or do whatever else it is they would like to do with their hour?
The issue is that the cocktail hour will be very last minute, because we cannot determine the weather until about a week before. Personally, as a guest, I would not be offended or bothered at all.. just wanted to get some opinions.

in my opinion, an hour isn’t really enough time for your guests to go do something….is there a way you can arrange for a backup indoor area for cocktail hour in case of rain?

no, we don’t want to add anymore to the budget and the facility does not have an indoor spot for a cocktail hour.. Realistically they will have to get downtown and park, so it may not even be a full hour.

You say people will have to get “downtown” and park. I’m not sure where you are located but it sounds like you are in a city. As long as there are bars and/or restaurants near your reception site that people can go to to kill time I think you’re fine. People can entertain themselves for an hour if need be. I would just wait and see what the weather is like and then after your ceremony have the officiant make some sort of announcement that there will be a cocktail hour beginning at six or an announcement that the reception will begin at 7, and there are plenty of places near by for people to hang out in the interim.

@Moose that’s a GREAT idea and just made me feel a TON better. We are in downtown Raleigh, NC and there are definitely local bars.. I will add them to the restaurant!
