My FI’s uncle is a farmer, whose business includes beef. The cows are processed (humanely) at a clean facility. There would be no trouble with any food laws, as the meat is inspected federally, rather than provincially. I could get whatever cuts that I, or the caterer, want at no charge. This is local beef, I know where it’s from, I know what it was fed, I know it’s food safe, and I know I can get it for free.
What I don’t know is how to broach the subject with a caterer. What should I say? Is this a ridiculous request? The butcher is reputable and we sell beef and lamb processed in this same facility in the farmer’s market, and it’s not a problem. So what do I say? What should I ask for? Should I simply insist that my meat come from this source?

Just tell the caterer that you have a source for the beef, and ask if he can work the numbers to show the cost of the meal without the beef cost. Im assuming the beef is a gift, or you’ll be purchasing at a great discount? I’m sure you can explain it, and he can work directly with your uncle or the company to get the beef to the kitchen.

mmm, you can ask but the caterer may or may not agree – i dont think you can insist though you can certainly look elsewhere if they say no
its quite an unusual request so youll just have to see what they say!!

I agree, it’s an unusual request, and I’m not going to insist to the point of alienating any good caterers. I think it depends on the caterer, larger ones connected to big restrauants would almost certainly say no. Thanks for the responses!

This seems totally reasonable.

My dad’s a farmer too, and I’m so excited we’ll be using meat from his and his friends’ farms! At least you know where it’s from and that you’re going to get good quality food 🙂
There’s no harm in asking your caterer and seeing what they say! What’s the worst that could happen?

I just got back from a meeting with a caterer and this was no problem for them! I met with the owner and she just wrote down “Bride supplying beef”. She didn’t even bat an eye!
