I am having a very late night dramatic candle light ceremony in September. Nothing about me has ever been typical. I have been searching high and low for a dress that feels like me. I’ve probably tried on 50 gowns. I know that I like tulle. I like a very full gown. I don’t want to look like everyone else, I want to be me but stay classy and not trendy, while breaking the mold. I am posting a pic of me in a dress that to this point has been the one that I have felt best in – but did not really get emotional. It’s Alvina Valenta 9261. I’m not sure I will be a bride who has a huge emotion for a dress.
But I’m also posting a pic of a couture gown by Dior that I have a gut reaction to everytime I see it. I have an amazing friend who is a professional clothing designer who regularly makes pagent dresses who would make me my own version of the Dior, because the price tag is too high for me. I’d love thoughts on:
1) Going rogue in a non-traditional Dior inspired dress? Is black and white too much? Would the dress in all ivory still have the power of this dress?
2) Thoughts on the Alvina? Should I run with it and stop obsessing? Did anyone else not have a big emotion for a dress?
3) Anyone else go with color? Regret it later? No regrets? Still feel like a bride?

i love the alvina dress and think you look amazing in it. the dior dress, i have mixed feelings on. i like the idea of it, but i feel like that particular dress has a little too much going on. i really like the top and i think the black/white is cool, but i’m not crazy about the skirt or the big bow. i feel like it makes so much of a statement that people would see the dress, but not really see you. if the skirt was more like the alvina dress, i think it would be much prettier.

I like the dior dress and think it would be awesome in ivory. You should go for it!

I think you look great in the Alvina, but it doesn’t sound like you are WOWd by it. The Dior one is definitely over-the-top and I think the black and white might be too much, but having it in ivory would really flatten the design I think. Hmmm not sure what to vote. Is there a chance you’d be interested in shopping some more?

I love the Alvina. I think you may be drawn towards Dior because you have looked at so many gowns and you desire something different. If you want the Dior, you may want to think about the color options. Either keep it the same as in the photo or change it. I do not think it will have the same dimensions if it was all Ivory. I think it would be better if it was ivory to mix with blush or another pastel. Both are gorgeous But ultimately, it has to be a gown you feel beautiful in. Don’t get any dress if you are not sure about it.

I really love your dress. If it was me I would have chosen the one you bought, but it’s your day and you need to go with what you want! 🙂

I’m not a fan of the Dior dress, even if it were in ivory. It’s a bit too angular, and makes too bold a statement. You want people to see beyond the dress, but this dress is too dramatic for that. Statements are great for the catwalk, not so much in person. I can’t explain it eloquently but it just feels too “high couture” to me.

I LOVE that second dress, and if you love it, you should totally go for it. This is supposed to be YOUR day.
However, I have a bit of an offbeat style- my dress will be a combo of the two below but with purples and light greens instead of the red/blues.

I LOVE the Alvina Valenta on you, and think that you should just go with it! That being said, the Dior is lovely as well and you would certainly make a statement!

I wore her:
…so, no I do not think black and white is too much. And I do not regret my dress one tiny bit. I felt like a bride AND I felt like me.
Have you checked out Sophia Tolli designs? I was really drawn to them because they were just a little different from what I felt like I was seeing everywhere else. I seriously considered this dress, too:

@beeble2121: Honestly, I think that Alvina dress is stunning. Very dramatic in a bridal way. I would be afraid to have someone try to recreate the Dior since it’s very structured and may not come out looking like what you pictured.

I said Dior and Ivory.. BUT i love it in the black and white, its an awesome dress. i just think she may have dress regret it you went with the colour for your wedding. I honestly dont think you should go ivory i think you should stay balck and white but make the white the promonent colour and black the highlights… i friend of mine got married in a black and white dress but it was mainly white with black panels.. it looked good and it still have a very wedding feel to it without being so traditional.

The Alvina Valenta is so much nicer than the ‘real’ Dior. I would be nervous about a knockoff, regardless of how talented. Even if executed perfectly, I think the Dior is too over the top and there are other ways to make a statement.

@bkrocks13: Thank you for sharing your experience! I have always been a bit on the quirky side, but as an old fashioned girl, worry I will regret not looking like a big white cloud. That said, I’m not a cloud girl! I love your dress! Thanks again for weighing in!
