So, Darling Husband has been offered a job in a different city, and his start date is in three weeks. This means that we have to pack up our whole house and get everything in a storage unit (we’re temporarily moving in with my parents) in less than three weeks!
Does anyone have any great moving/packing tips? Any awesome to-do lists or planners? Any help is good help – I’m a little intimidated!

@redsmarties: Maybe you can change the title of the thread to moving/packing tips? I was going to post a similar question… we’re due to close in 3-4 weeks, and the thought of packing up everything is overwhelming! At least our move is local though!
Are you excited about the new city? 3 weeks isn’t very much time to wrap your head around a big move! Good luck!

When packing up our house I spent the first 3 days purging everything. I literally emptied all the drawers, cabinets, and closets and got rid of what we weren’t using. I then made sure to pack at least one box of “keep” stuff for each room per day over the next 2 weeks. Whatever wasn’t in boxes after only took an afternoon to pack up. I also made a master list so things were easier to find. The box was assigned a number (which was written on every side of the box along with what room it belonged in) and I wrote what room the box belonged in and exactly what was in each box so everything was simple to find.

Purge, purge, purge. DOnate and dump. Streamline it as much as possible! Also, label every box! Try to keep stuff you might want out of storage sooner at the front of the storage unit – labeled, of course!
It only took us about a week to pack our apartment up and purge stuff – but it was hectic! If you have a friend willing to help, that would be great – my friend would run to Goodwill with me and help us offload donations, or take things to the trash/recycling center while my husband packed the stuff that was actually going. We got rid of most stuff though – we sold all our furniture on craigslist, for example. Only shipped essentials! If you take more stuff, it should be less insane!

I agree with getting rid of everything you don’t absolutely need now. We are listing our house in October and have spent the last two nights going through our bedroom closet and some of the basement. I plan on getting rid of probably 50% of our stuff for staging purposes and to make it easier when it comes to packing. This is only day three and I’m already exhausted, so it’s a good idea to start now.
Best of luck to you!

@78h2o: Ooh, good point. Any idea how to change the title? And yes, I’m SO excited (its our hometown, we moved away for work 2 years ago).
@cant.wait.to.be.mrs.d: So smart to make master lists! Did you number the boxes or something to keep track?
@crayfish: Ooh, I will ask a friend to make Goodwill trips with me. Unfortunately, we’re going to need our furniture (I’d love to sell it and start over)
@Yellow.Clover: Thanks! I’ve purged clothes so far – how did I get so many things that I never wear?? Need to start working on the junk/keepsake boxes next.

@redsmarties: Yep all the boxes are numbered.

@redsmarties: How exciting that you will be moving back to your home town! Best of luck! Please let us know how it goes, what strategies you used, and if you have any tips for us.

I’m doing something similar today/this month! Hooray for moving bees! (Although I’m only moving an hour away and I only have a few rooms to pack, not my whole house)
I found this website on how to do an “organized move” (as if…) So far it’s got a lot of great tips!
Another tip my mother taught me: When packing clothing, Get a big plastic storage container from like wal-mart, they’re a couple bucks, they hold about 3x what a normal box would, and you can re-use them at the new house! Plus, they protect clothing from water, dirt, bugs, etc. WHILE moving. 😉 Just a tip!
Also, if you do decide to donate anything (IE: to goodwill or purple heart or whatever) make sure you INVENTORY everything! Some states/areas give tax breaks for that kind of stuff! My sister and I did that last year and it ended up totaling quite a chunk of change! So look online before donating stuff! 🙂

@littlebluebride: Nice website! Darling Husband thinks I’m nuts because I have lists & charts everywhere. Hope your move goes well!! And good call on the plastic storage bins – because we will be storing all of our stuff in a unit for quite awhile, we’ll be stocking up on those for sure.
@Yellow.Clover: I’m planning to blog about it, for sure – but I will also let you ladies know how I structured everything – I’m sure there are other moving bees who could use some tips!
