Well, I haven’t hosted one, but I’ve been to one. We knew before hand, but most of the other guests didn’t and it was nice. They married at their house (not a shack if you get my drift) that was still decorated for Christmas and they married in front of a 20 foot tall tree with all white lights and silver ornaments. It was beautiful. They tented the backyard to serve dinner and lots of wine and champagne. We danced until midnight, then had fireworks at 12. It was fun, but I would say that their older guests didn’t enjoy it as much as we did.

Elizabeth at Elizabeth Anne Designs is doing a NYE vow renewal, you might want to head over there and look through her ideas and I’m sure she’s love to talk to you about it.

I think that sounds like a great idea!  My only concern about the surprise aspect is making sure you get everyone there that you want to be there. You don’t want to make it "mandatory" or people might catch on!!  I like the idea though! Keep us updated!

I think it’s a lovely idea, if your motivations are pure. I’m not trying to be snotty, and I’m sorry if it comes across that way, but do think about why you want to throw a "surprise" wedding. Is it simply because you think it will be a fun idea, or because you do not want to put pressure on your guests to come if they already have other plans for New Year’s? Or is it because people around you wouldn’t approve of or be happy about a wedding, or would cause a problem if they knew ahead of time?

All of those things are your business, of course, and I do not mean to suggest that you air it here or even that any of those things are true. But if it has anything to do with how you fear people will react, it would be better to get those reactions over with well before the wedding and work through it together as a family.

From a design standpoint, I do love how beautiful winter holiday weddings are.
