Okay, so the first bit is mostly inspired by a bit of a back and forth I was having with another user in another thread regarding GIA certification. The rest is inspired by old threads that I had read in the past.
First of all, Tiffany’s diamonds are *not* GIA certiified. They do however back their diamonds with a guarantee that if you send it off to get graded (say, by GIA) and it comes back 2 grades lower then they will replace it with another diamond with a diamond with the same specs or better. Of course, the whole idea is that if they are of equal grade quality as GIA or else that would be a HUGE PITA for Tiffany’s.
While I agree that, as far as diamonds go, you can get the same for less elsewhere, I do not agree that you can always find the same quality ring for less elsewhere. I love my Soleste, but I tried DESPERATELY to find a double halo that I felt was on par with it (for less). Every single similar ring I found was too bulky, had poor metal work, or had TOO MUCH visible metal in the halo. When it comes to their more complex rings, i think they’re worth the extra money. Plus, when you love something specific, something similar might be a little disappointing.
Do you pay more for the name? Yes, god yes. The prices on their website really are starting prices. If you purchased the ring with the lowest possible specs in that ct size, it might be accurate.
Does my willingness to pay more mean I’m stupid? No. It means that I like what I like. Good for you that you’re more frugal that I am and that you don’t care about names at all. I can guarantee that no one on the bee who has a Tiffany’s ring or REALLY wants a specific ring that happens to be from Tiffany’s cares that you think Tiffany’s is stupid and overpriced. I have seen people pop into threads where people were sharing their Tiffany’s rings JUST to say that they would NEVER pay so much just for a name. I’m sure all the women sharing their rings just loved that. Really. Thanks for the advice.
I’m sure I will get flamed for this, but it’s not that I think all non-designer (Tiffany’s, Cartier, Harry Winston, etc.) rings are shitty. I know lots of rings everywhere are beautiful and are very well made (and Tiffany’s might not even make a style you like!), but that doesn’t mean I’m down with you bitching about how you HATE Tiffany’s every time someone mentions it.
I don’t HATE all those other jewelry stores you’re getting your rings from. I don’t think anyone is STUPID for spending less money or more money than I do on anything (rings, purses, whatever).
When someone asks if they should get a Tiffany’s ring or something else (like in the recent thread), feel free to say “No the cost is cuh-razyyyy” like many of you did… but when someone OBVIOUSLY is looking only at Tiffany’s and Cartier, they don’t care that you think they shouldn’t do either. They asked “this or that” not “this, that, or the other.” If they didn’t ask your opinion of the brand AT ALL, then you can shut it because they probably don’t care.
End very unpopular rant.
EDIT: Lest anyone be confused by my use of “don’t care”… please scroll down to see my many clarifications of my exact meaning.
