Tiffany setting or De Beers solitaire?

If you want to pay for a brand with some history id go Tiffany. They invented the prong setting, and the 6 prong solitaire is a classic now. I have the Tiffany Setting and I love it. Its fun to go in and get it serviced and cleaned there too. Obviously you can get something very (though not exactly…) similar anywhere but it is fun to have a luxury experience and it would fetch a higher resale value should that ever come up.

Brands aside, I just plain like 6 prong solitaires better because they reinforce the roundness of the stone and are more secure than 4.

bluehawk :  Both setting are very pretty.   I am partial to the DeBeers setting because I prefer cathedral settings (where the sides come up to meet the center stone).  Sometimes with the 6 prong Tiffany setting you can have a hard time finding a wedding band to sit flush, if that’s something that’s important to your girlfriend.

bluehawk :  If she’s really a minimalist, I’d say don’t bother with either of these options.

If you want to get her a simple solitaire, your options are virtually endless. With either of these, you are paying a premium for the “name” attached, which has no objective value.

James Allen has a good reputation and virtually the EXACT SAME SETTING for $699 and set it with whatever stone suits.

Just something to consider.

My ering and eternity band are from Tacori. Tacori rings are handcrafted in the US. My husbands band is also from Tacori and we’ve had nothing but professional service from them.

Out of the two you have chosen I prefer the Tiffany although they are quite similar as you said. I dont care for the shoulders on the DeBeers one, and I also like the 6 prongs better than 4. As other posters have stated, unless you really want to give her the lux experience or brand name, you can find something for way cheaper that looks the same elsewhere!

I prefer the 6 prong, and I dislike cathedral settings, so I would go with the Tiffany.

However, if she’s minimalistic and doesn’t need a complicated band or a huge diamond, then go with a non-name brand setting and get a super high quality smaller diamond.  You’ll save more money for the honeymoon that way. 😉

Most of the responses you’ll get here will tell you to not get a brand name ring. And if that’s the route you end up going, then great.

But if you’re still after a Tiffany/DeBeers, then I’ll chime in to say that I have a Tiffany solitaire that I love, mainly for the 6 prongs and the profile. But I’ve always thought 4 prongs are a great option for those who are on the fence between a round and a cushion. Happy hunting!

First off, I wouldn’t be working under the assumption that all women like Tiffany’s. You know what they say about assuming. But it doesn’t matter what all women like, just what your girlfriend likes.

You’ve said your girlfriend is minimalist. Is this in terms of style of clothing or lifestyle? Does she want a name brand with history or does she not care?

If it’s a lifestyle, then maybe do a recycled gold solitaire?

Bezels are also really nice minimal settings for rings.

I’m minimalist and specifically requested that fiance not get Tiffanys because I didn’t want to pay for brand.

bluehawk :  If you’re determined to go with one or the other of these, I’d say Tiffany for sure. The 6 prong is more elegant and has a more delicate look while actually being more sturdy. Also, the way the stone is set maximizes the light coming in under and through the stone, so it will sparkle more. It is a true classic and has a sterling reputation. DeBeers, not so much.

I can’t imagine many girls who wouldn’t be at least a little excited to see that blue box come out…

Do you know if your girlfriend wants to wear a wedding ring? And if she prefers for the wedding ring to sit flat against the engagement ring?

I ask because you’ll notice a small gap in the tiffany 6 prong setting.

What is it you like more about the second one? Is it the way the band meets the stone, the 4 prongs? What do you think your girlfriend would like more about the tiffany? Is it the brand, the prongs, the style?

If you want a tiffany ring that looks a little more like the second one, you could go with the harmony ring http://www.tiffany.com/engagement/rings/tiffany-harmony-1853/1carats-29463379
