We planned on having a long engagement of over two years but man, time flies. I just got an email from the Knot reminding me that 16 months from today I will be marrying my best friend. Yikes! I gotta get to work. The past 9 months of engagement bliss have been full of graduating from law school, taking and passing the bar, and now preparing to move to a new city together. I should probably put down the wedding magazines and blogs and start making some serious plans. Any advice from long engagement brides? How do I get and stay motivated to get this all done?

I didn’t really do much planning until I was around a year out from our wedding even though our engagement was 3 years. It becomes more real as you get closer which I found made it easier to plan.

wow, 3 years. I thought 2 was really long. I don’t know if all this planning would hold my attention for 3 years.

I go through spurts of planning, and then a whole month or two where I don’t even think about wedding details. And our engagement’s only 2.5 years! It does feel like it’s going fast already.

In some ways it seems to fly, others it seems to drag by! I got engaged in October of 09 and am getting married in January of 11, so I’m at a little over 8 months. I didn’t really get started on any major planning until right at the 1 year mark. I decided on where I was having it and stuff, but the rest of the plans consisted of me just getting ideas together. The plus side of a long engagement is that you have a long time to think through and decide exactly how you want things, stress free. The down side I have realized is second guessing yourself! If I were you, I wouldn’t stress over too much of the details until a little closer to time, but definitely be getting ideas of what you want! In a few months, I’d go ahead and book your venues because those book quick! Good luck and enjoy everything!
