I don’t know how much I’ve mentioned this, but about 2 months ago, I made a decision to order my dress within China. I live here most of the time, so my decision was a relatively well informed one. However, I live 30 hours (by train) away from the wedding dress ‘district’ (which is near Shanghai, if you’re curious), and I know how the tailors in my area are – good, but not wedding dress good. So I decided to order one.
I did my research. I found a seller with really good reviews, lots of them. I haven’t found any bad reviews of him. But it’s still a gamble, even though the price is definitely right. I picked a dress with a style that incorporate everything I love, and sent him photos and notes on what I’d like changed, asked for a price quote. Got one back.
Begged two of my friends to help me take fifty million measurements (tell you what, nothing cements a friendship like asking someone to measure the distance between your nipples for you!), and sent in my order, about a month ago. I got an email back the next day saying my paypal payment had been denied.
Turns out paypal doesn’t like you to access your account using proxies (the only way I can access 85% of the internet), and thought I was trying to hack my own account. It took me 6 days and a very poorly connected international phone call to get it unlocked. I resubmitted my order. This time it went through.
That was three weeks ago. When I initially placed the order, I felt totally good about it. Afterall, I found a great dressmaker, with great reviews! The longer I’ve waited though, the more fear has built up in my gut. Three weeks is a long time for unknown.
I got an email today – she has shipped. She’ll be at my parents’ house in 5 days. Business days or calendar days? American days or Chinese days? Afterall, we’re 12 hours ahead!
I won’t get to see this dress until July, but my mom will unpack it for me and let me know what she thinks of it. She’ll take pictures, and probably some measurements, and we’ll hope for the best. As long as the fabric and basic construction are good, we have a seamstress friend who can do free alterations for us.
But now I have five days to wait, and a tracking number to obsess over. It’s going to be a long week!
I’ll update you when she comes in and let you know how it’s going. And if all goes well (or not), I’ll pass along the name of the dressmaker I went with. PM me if you’d like to know earlier. 🙂
