Are you doing a full Catholic mass? That can be 1.5 hours, which would take you to 3:30PM. Then another 45 minutes to an hour for a receiving line (depending on how many guests), taking your guests to about 4:30PM. That leaves about an hour for your guests to mill around? I think as long as you have refreshments/snacks on hand, as well as some activities, as I guest, I would not mind.

If it’s going to be longer than an hour, there could be two problems. One, a lot of people may choose to skip the ceremony knowing that there will be a large gap in time. Secondly, you risk people taking off on their own and finding some other form of entertainment, potentially causing them to be late to the reception.

I found myself in the second position – went to a wedding at 2PM, we were out of the chuch by 3PM, but the reception didn’t start until 6PM…a bunch of us went to the bar, drank a little too much and those of us that made it to the reception (yes, there were a few who literally called it a night and skipped the reception), we ended up being late. Not planned, but we just lost track of time. Now I was MUCH younger then – and not fully aware of proper wedding guest ettiquette – but it happened.
