I wouldn’t start trying until you will for sure hit that 52 week mark. Waiting one cycle is well worth the peace of mind.

I live in the US and I wish we had a program like yours. My husband and I will start trying in a cycle or two. Between the two of us we have managed to save over nine months of sick leave… not counting our annual leave or both types that we will earn this year. We felt like that was a safe amount of leave to have for baby time because we could easily get a baby in daycare at six months. We intend to use our leave in a smart way too and stagger it, so it will last the full year if we would like.  A year of protected absence is all we get.

No. As long as the baby isn’t born before the 52 week marker I don’t see an issue. It’s really nobody’s business whether you have the baby at 53 weeks or 54 weeks… either way you would still be eligible.

Since it’s 40+ weeks away, I’d give it time. See how your boss is, and you’ll get a sense about how they might react.
