My wedding is in a few weeks (eek!) and at my last meeting with the reception hall, they requested being given the tip for service, before the reception? Like, ASAP they wanted it? Is this weird, has anyone else encountered this? I mean, what incentive will the servers have to do a good job if they’ve already been given a tip?

hrmmm… yea thats a little odd i think… i know i am just putting all the tips in marked envelopes and giving them to the vendors either after the reception or before (if i dont feel like worrying about it!) 🙂 hrmmm… i donno? the servers may not see the tip till the end of the night tho.

Our tax and gratuity is calculated into our total price so technically we are tipping before we even show up but if you are actually giving them extra money at your reception as the tip, I would never hand over that envelope until the services have been rendered. I’m sure they’ll still do a good job (or atleast I would hope so) but you have no way of knowing that. You could get a lazy waiter who walks around once with your passed hor d’ourves and then sets up camp in the kitchen for the rest of the night. I find it a little sketchy that your venue would suggest that but like I said, mine is already calculated into the price so maybe its more common than I realize.
All of the tips that we will be giving out the night of our wedding will be handed out by either my dad or our Best Man towards the end of our reception. We will have everything in their own envelope so theres no confusion.

Is your tip part of your contract? (i.e. I’ve seen contacts that state flat our tip will be %15 of total.) or something like that.
If it is stated, maybe they ask for it upfront because somehow they were burned in the past?
If it is written in your contact I wouldn’t think it was too odd to give the tip upfront. BUT, if tip is not part of your contract, and is something you determine, this would be really weird to give BEFORE you even see the service!!

I find this weird..I’d speak to the place about it and perhaps request that if the tip is mandatory pre-reception, that the option of reviewing it afterwards depending on the service be allowed.
