- Wedding: June 2013
My hairdresser is a friend of mine. He and his partner are attending our wedding as guests, and he offered to do my hair that morning as a gift to me! We did our trial run yesterday, and he didn’t charge me for that – and he’s also coloring my hair the week before the wedding for free. I gave him a small tip yesterday after the hair trial, which he seemed surprised about… and it got me thinking about what to do the day of the wedding and at our next appointment for the hair color. I usually tip him well, and planned to give him a tip on the day of the wedding, but it just occured to me that it might be sort of diminishing the gift he’s giving me.
So… am I over thinking this? Should I just give him a big tip at our next appointment at the salon and just write a thank you note after the wedding for doing my hair the day-of? Should I give him a gift card or a bottle of wine to say “thanks!” in place of a tip? Or should I make a charitable donation in his name? There’s a charity that he does a lot of work for and I know is close to his heart… so I thought that might be a good way of showing my appreciation without being like, “here, take some cash!”
What’s the protocol for tipping friendors?
