So most of my life I’ve avoided cameras like the plague, and you can tell in many of them that I’m in the middle of an attemt to escape, or I have that weird smile you can tell isn’t genuine. More of a grimace. As you can imagine, that does not make for a flattering photo.
Now that I’m a bride and escape is not an option, I could use some tips for how to look as good as possible in my photos, and make the sessions as quick and painless as possible for myself and the photographer.
I would say try to wear something comfortable for your photos whether that be your engagement outfit or your wedding dress. I always feel better about taking pictures after I get pampered and get my nails, hair and makeup professionally done. This may help you relax. Also if you try to get natural versus posed shots. Maybe you and your SO could be doing an activity like playing chess or hula hooping. Let your personality shine!
Other than that maybe you should explore why you hate having your pic taken. Where does that anxiety come from. A bad childhood experience, poor self image, fear of pics being put on the internet…etc. Good luck!
I always tell fiance (neck out, head down). It takes some practice, sometimes Fiance get’s confused and looks contorted but there’s a big difference between an extended neck and a squished up neck IMO. He’s learning how to direct me so I get those flattering angles…hah!
@MrsChamp: I think the best thing to do is relax and be happy. I think genuine emotion in pictures make for better pictures. And also getting a photographer that likes to take candids helps too. Our photographer sometimes used posed pictures but most of the time she tells us to stand a certain way and have head up or down etc. then just kind of waits for a moment where she can take a shot and surprising our engagement pictures turned out really well because of it. 🙂 My Fiance and I don’t like our pictures taken either! 🙂 And on your wedding day, it shouldn’t be hard to look happy after all it is supposed to be one of the happiest and joyful days of your life! 🙂
