I’ve also heard chewing gum while cutting an onion helps.

My eyes are beyond sensitive to the sting, I cry so hard.  The trick is to not cut the root end off the onion.  If you want a diced onion you cut the top part off (leaving the root part in tact) cut vertical slices toward the root (without cutting the root off) than cut horizontal towards the root. Viola, diced onion and no crying!

I’ve also been know to wear snowboard goggles, and that works too =)

@red_rose: I think this is true! I never had problems with onions bothering me when I wore contacts. I had Lasik a few years ago so I no longer wear them and now it BURNS!

I don’t have this problem, I wear contacts so no idea if these work:

1. Cut the onion underwater

2. Light a candle next to you & the candle flame will help absorb the onion burn.

3. Eat bread (a friend told me this one). Maybe french bread because it is a little tougher to chew then other breads so it’ll last longer :).

4. Put some vinegar on the cutting board (though I don’t like the smell of vinegar but maybe its better than burning eyes).

run the onion under the tape after you cut it in half. works wonders!
