Hoop skirts allow for air flow and are comfortable.  You do want to practice sitting in it so it doesn’t pop up (which should be an issue unless you really plop yourself down).

I got a petticoat to make my dress more poofy, and I liked the look but it was NOT comfortable. It was really hot and made it extra hard to go to the bathroom. Maybe a hoop skirt would be more comfortable and give you the poofy princess ball gown look you are going for? You should take your dress back to the bridal store you bought it from and try one on with your dress and see how you like it and how it feels.

@Ibblet:  There are skirts that will add more tulle underneath, but the hoop skirt as another poster suggested will work! That’s what I ended up getting and it feels even better as far as walking and such than without because it pushes all of the tulle that’s already there out and away from my legs! WONDERFUL!

I liked a hoop skirt more than I did tulle.  It kept me cooler and kept the dress off my legs.  When I walked with tulle it kept getting stuck between my legs and tripping me up.  Plus I got more poof with hoop skirts.  There’s a trick to sitting down on some places, though–but most of the time it didn’t matter and I just sat normally.  I never had any instances where the hoop just flipped my dress up.
