When my back injury flared up earlier this year I was put on pain meds that made me suuuper constipated. I was able to work out, I ate well, even tried all those make-you-go foods, and nothing worked! I finally turned to milk of magnesia. It worked really well and is not one of those terrible pills that pulls water from you and makes everything incredibly painful.

@ecrowe1218:  Hey I’m a nurse. Gonna agree with a PP. How quickly have you increased your fiber intake? Any meds you’re currently taking? Any allergies? There are a lot of factors that can contribute to constipation. Even pregnancy. Gonna ask, but do you think you may be pregnant, or no? Sorry, just needing a little more background.

Otherwise, I would suggest an OTC (over the counter) laxative like Phillips’ Milk of Magnesia brand and follow the directions on the label. Please follow-up with your doctor if you have any more concerns. You can also PM me if you’d like.

Calcium with magnesium. I have done this daily for a long time.  I buy Nature Made and take 2 in the morning and 2 at night. It’s the magnesium that does it but the magnesium also helps you absorb the calcium which most of us females need.

+1 Fiber supplement. Laxatives will eventually cause dependence if used too regularly.

Target makes these gummy fiber chewables that I SWEAR by. Inexpensive, and seriously…they changed my life.

Changed. My. Life. Laughing I have two every day and I’m the most regular and happy I’ve ever been.

Eat a handful of prunes and don’t veer too far from the bathroom.

Buy a bottle of magnesium citrate  at  Wal-Mart –  it’s like two bucks.  Drink the whole thing over ice.  It’s not bad, just tastes like really sweet soda.  That will clear you right out within six hours.  After that, try supplementing your diet with Miralax or Citrucel.

@ecrowe1218:  I just want to preface this advice with the concept that persistent constipation is often the symptom of something more serious…if you can’t get your system back on track, a trip to the doctor is in order….if you just ruined yourself with a cheese log and some nachos…I feel ya….coconut milk, sparkling pear juice and a little fiber should have you movin like Ginger Rodgers!

@ecrowe1218:  Senacot (if thats how you spell it) is easy on your system, not like a harsh laxative. Also apple sauce and fiber foods and drink lots of water

Dietary Answers = Coffee, Bran, Prunes, Kiwi Fruit, and up your WATER intake.  Water is important in making poop move… because if you are dehydrated your Intestines are too !!

Other Answers = Metamucil – Stool Softener – Laxitives – Milk of Magnesia

Hope this helps,

@MichiganGirl24: you said,

If you aren’t going number 2 at least once a day, technically you are constipated. If you haven’t gone in two weeks and you’ve tried laxative, I would call your  doctor.

Well “techinically” this info is incorrect.

Not eveyone is the same, and goes every day.

Here is a quote from Web MD (other sources have similar info, like the Mayo Clinic)

Constipation occurs when bowel movements become difficult or less frequent. The normal length of time between bowel movements ranges widely from person to person. Some people have bowel movements three times a day; others, only one or two times a week. Going longer than three days without a bowel movement is too long. After three days, the stool or feces become harder and more difficult to pass.

Try Miralax. It is a laxative, but it doesn’t have the negative side effect of dependency like other laxatives do. You just but a spoonful in a glass of water and drink it. It takes 1-2 days to work sometimes.
