No - cocktails and canapes go together like Carrie Bradshaw and Manolos! : (4 votes)

I don’t think you have to have waiter-passed canapes, but you need to have some sort of food.  Would it be cheaper to have a cheese/fruit/bread display?  I went to a wedding once where there was no food at the cocktail hour, and all the men were so STARVING (and can be so dramatic about it) that I had to stop my date from eating food out of the candy buffet meant for after dinner.  I think you need a little food.

Unfortunately, drinking on an empty stomach is not a good idea, especially if the drinks are being paid for by you. Could you ditch the passed items and just go for veggies, cheese, and crackers?

I think in that case some nuts would be perfect!

I think you should have something for people to snack on, especially if the ceremony is at 3 and they won’t be eating until after 6:30! But nuts, mints, fruit, crackers, etc. are all inexpensive – no need for fancy canapes!

I think that you need to have some sort of food. With your ceremony at 3 and your reception at 6:30, people are going to be hanging around for quite a while without anything to snack on (and they probably will have had lunch at least a couple of hourse before the ceremony. I’m not really sure that nuts and mints are substantial enough though…I think maybe moving your cheese board to the cocktail hour would be a good idea.
