I voted for the kitchen, but I really wanted to click on the closet and bedroom too!  My current rent house has a separate shower and jet tub that I will miss dearly when we move this summer, not to mention the walk in closet and master bedroom with space for my desk and bookshelves.

    A DISHWASHER! And air conditioning.

Yes, I say this from experience, my first apartment had neither. It was also a third floor vintage walkup. Got to over 100 degrees many summer days!

Besides that, I’m fairly flexible. I dislike carpet, but won’t say no to a place because of it. I do need a nice amount of natural light.

I guess around here you can’t really be choosy… I’m just happy that R & my bedroom is now 13×11… last year it was 9×10.

Fiance and I just had this conversation yesterday!  We both feel that the most important part of our home is the kitchen.  Next is my humongous walk in closet complete with a sitting area (hey a girl can dream!)

This is probably Too Much Information but we used to live in a condo with two bathrooms and I was SO happy about that because one night I had the flu and Fiance got food poisoning… That could have been a recipe for disaster if we had a smaller place with one bathroom!!!

If I could change anything about my current home, I would rip out my kitchen and put in an Ikea kitchen. I had one at our old place and I miss it SOOOO much. It was so functional!!!

Hard to decide what to vote on in this poll, but when Fiance and I were shopping for the house we bought together last June, we knew we were stuck on having a FABULOUS kitchen. I don’t know that I’d put that as a necessity if we were renting – we cook and bake all the dang time, but really nice kitchens are of course super expensive – but since we were committing to our home for the next 5-7 years, I knew we wanted the granite countertops, badass gas stove, etc. It has proven as useful and awesome as I had anticipated.

We lived in a place with only one bathroom (although it did have two bedrooms) and we’ll NEVER do that again.  There are some times where you both need to go to the bathroom and if you only have one bathroom it’s not possible.  When we lived in the one bathroom place I had to run up to school one day to use the bathroom there because my darling husband was using the one at home.

Now we have two bathrooms and I’ll never go back to just one.

We have none of the above.  :(((

I’d have to say a kitchen.  After that, location, location, location.  I would rather be somewhere interesting than have space.

I wish this had been multiple choice!!

    • Definitely NEED two bathrooms.  NEED.  We also have to have two sinks.
    • NEED a huge closet.  Our current place has TWO closets, a walk-in for me and a regular closet for Darling Husband.
    • NEED a garage.  Will not consider a place without one.
    • Need two or more bedrooms.
    • Need a dishwasher.
    • Need a laundry room (with appliances!)
    • Highly desirable: backyard.

When we were looking for places we found a lot of really great looking lofts and apartments, but I honestly refuse to live in a place without ALL of the above.  It is all a matter of necessity to me!

    @LaborofLove –

I compromised on the hardwood/carpet debate this year and you know where that got me? Our apartment flooded with sewage, it soaked up in the carpet padding and carpets DURING FINALS WEEK and they refused to replace it for four whole days until I literally dragged management up and made them stand in our apartment.

Moral of the story: it would have been a much easier mess to deal with with hardwood, and I got a B+ in a class that I should have gotten an A in all because I settled for carpet. So stay strong 😛

If I answered this just 1 week ago, I would have definitely said “big kitchen” but somehow the number of bathrooms trumped the big’o kitchen! I would have never imagined this!

We’re seriously looking at a home right now with a small kitchen (with room for expanding) and one of the main factors pushing it is the number of bathrooms. Swedes don’t seem to like as many bathrooms as much as Americans and an en suite is especially hard to find. In the end number of bathrooms and en suite won out – plus there will be room to expand the kitchen later down the line (that’s if we get it).

Natural light, hardwood floors, and a backyard were the biggies for us. We actually have none of the things on the survey list, but love our house nonetheless! 🙂
