can you afford hors d’oeuvres? you could even make big batches of things like pasta salad in the days before the wedding, or get sandwich trays from costco. if people are hungry, they will leave early. a few hors d’oeuvres plus desserts should be good.

@Buttercup9102011: We did that and it cost us about $400 extra. Is this your only reception or are you having something in the evening for immediate family and bridal party?

@Buttercup9102011: Since it’s family, do you think you could do a “pot luck” reception? Have family members bring their own home cooked snacks for the reception and you provide cake and punch?

Don’t worry, no one will expect a full meal in the mid-afternoon.  I would do cake, punch, and other snacks – either hors d’oeuvres, or even just chips, preztels, veggie sticks to supplement the nuts. That will be perfectly fine. I would definitely stay. 🙂

I would just get some platters from a place like Costco – sandwichs/wraps, veggies, fruit, pasta salad and cake.

I would definitely try to get something that has a little protein in it :). The finger sandwiches sound perfect.

As a guest I’d honestly be really unimpressed with no food. Sanwhiches, and appy’s would suffice but cake, punch and nuts? Not so much. ANY food is better than NO food (nuts isn’t “food”). Cheap food options are available- massive costco trays might work…

Love the idea of sandwich trays, veggie trays etc…you can do this much cheaper than catered meals obviously.  I would love it, and even if you just did punch and cake I would stay  : )   I don’t go to weddings for the food, I go becasue I love the person getting married.    Don’t go broke worrying about everyone else!
