Will/Did you and your Fiance use shower gifts before you were married?
I have heard so many differing thoughts on this. FI’s brother and SIL didn’t use any of their shower gifts until after they were married (even though they were living in the same household). They said that it was bad luck. Fiance and I are still living in separate states. He just graduated this past weekend (YAY!), and will be moving back home near the end of the month. Since I have been storing all of the gifts at my house, we did agree that we wouldn’t use anything until we were living in the same place.
However, when we move in together, we won’t have much of anything. I just wanted to see what everyone else thought.

We used ours right away! We lived in a small one bedroom apartment, our shower was in August and our wedding was in November. There was no way I was going to stare at a living room full of gifts for that long! I am an organized freak and had to put it all away 🙂

Well, I haven’t received any gifts yet, but if I get a KitchenAid mixer before my wedding, you’d better believe I’m using it!

The reasoning is that you aren’t supossed to because there is always a chance the wedding will be called off and you would need to return the gifts.
We told people this and they either rolled their eyes or laughed and said that they wouldn’t want theirs back. I think they know that with us–9 years together–there is no chance of that happening!
We’ve used a couple small items, but most are too big for the kitchen!

@Bao: I think this would be much harder for me if Fiance and I were living in the same home right away. It’s driving me nuts keeping the gifts in a different room! I can’t wait to set up our new place!
@careanne: Fiance got me a KitchenAid Mixer one year for Christmas…I LOVE it! I really like to bake, and it does make a different in the final product. I hope you get one!
@Roe: I can understand that. Fiance and I are in a similar position to you…we’ve been together 7.5 years. We should make it :-).

I’m using some and not others. I’m using stand-alone items (crock-pot, glasses) but not things that come in sets (every day, flatware, china).

My mom got me the KitchenAid off of my registry a month before my shower and 5 months before the wedding because she found a sale. You’d better believe that I had a bitchin batch of buttercream icing going in that sucker the night it got delivered haha

- Wedding: July 2012 - Baltimore Museum of Industry
My shower was last weekend, and the gifts are on top of the kitchen cabinets. FI’s lease ends the month we get married, so I’m waiting for him to move in before I start using anything.

We didn’t live together until we were married… That probably helped us to wait to use them 🙂

We have started using some of our shower gifts like new knives and silverware but for some of the other larger items we are waiting until we have time to go through and really put them away, meaning getting rid of the old stuff.
It has always been my opinion that if you have sent a thank you for an item you can start using it.

Agree with PPs, while you’re supposed to open but NOT use the gifts until after the wedding, what’s the harm if you need the item? (Like you’ve just moved and need to use the plates and silverware…) I would never be offended, in fact I think I’d be flattered!
(My two cents – just please send a “thank you” note when you get the gift.)

I actually had a few guests tell me to use the wedding presents even, prior to the big day. One told me “I’m not worried that you won’t get married.”
