After a failed attempt at dating and working our way back to being close friends, on July 7, 2009, we decided to give it another go after graduating high school and before moving across the state for college. While both of us ended up studying in the DFW, we were still an hour apart. We could only see each other on weekends. I’d bus into downtown Dallas, DART to the nearest station where he’d pick me up. 2 hours each way every weekend.
Eventually, like all couples do, we hit our bumps in the road. On a couple occasions, we almost broke up and once, we actually did. After learning who we were as individuals again, we gave it another try and, as they say, third time’s the charm.
Our relationship has changed and matured as we have changed and matured. We have never been as strong a couple as we are today. We needed the time apart taking care of ourselves so that we could get back to taking care of each other.
On October 31, 2012, I asked him to marry me and he said, “Look at the kitten!!” and then he said yes. Then, February 15, 2013, he presented to me the reason he hadn’t proposed first, his mother’s engagement ring and wedding band soldered together. He’d been waiting for his parents to upgrade so he could give me her ring. It had yet to be resized, but now it fits and I wear it pride, never taking it off.
We’ve had our ups and downs and, as we got through those, we’ll face whatever life gives us side by side and hand in hand.

What a beautiful story!! And a major congrats to you both!!
Also, I just need to add how incredible and mature and commendable you both are for not letting anything or anyone stand in the way of your individual goals and dreams. Even though you both wanted badly to be together you still pursued your own education and lives and enjoyed your youth!! Those are the best years of your life, and such an amazing time to explore who YOU are. Kudos, and congrats!!

this made me tear up a little hehe congratulations!!!!! I might be giving my location away, but I used to ride DART lol I know how long they take sometimes and it can be quite a hassle depending on the time, so that was a huuuge sacrifice from both of you, how awesome!
Can you post a pic of your ring? I’m a sucker for heirlooms hehe

@Rueamour: Thank you so much. I was very hesitant to start a relationship before leaving for school because of all the new people you meet and all of the new experiences, not to mention the distance. I shared this with him and he said very simply, “If there ever comes a time that you meet someone or find someone you’d rather be with, just let me know and we’ll go from there.” Not once in the four years have I ever found anyone I wanted to be with than him.
@cherriesandcream: Here it is!
