Well, let me state upfront that I do not own a pair of Toms, because while I admire the idea behind them, they are so fugly. I do not think they are built to last and that $50 is basically a charitable donation, so you want to feel good about yourself, then get a pair. But if you want to look hip and fashionable, check out Minnetonka mocs.

They’re kind of like your beloved boat shoes but way cuter than Toms. Just my opinion, of course:)

@jedeve: I’ve been wondering the same thing lately. I think they’re adorable!

You could get Sanuks if you like the look of Toms. I ave had the same pair for 3 summers now and they are wearing nicely.

I have 3 pairs of TOMS and I LOVE them!   I’ve had them for about a year now and wear them all the time.  I wear my gray ones the most without socks and they aren’t sweaty or stinky.   They haven’t worn down at all either.  They seem so simply made, but i do think there is some quality.

I’d highly recommend them!

I think it depends on how hard you wear them. I’ve had friends who have had a pair for a couple years but then I’ve seen others wear through a pair (like toes sticking out and everything) in less than 8 months.

I have a pair, but I don’t really wear them that often.

Replace your Sperrys! Boat shoes are so classic and Toms are kinda ugly lol- they remind me of something a really old refugee would wear.

Then again it’s 10 am and I’m wearing 4 inch peep toes so maybe you can’t go by me!

I really like my pair of Toms, but probably only wear them about once a week (and rarely all day), since they are red. I haven’t seen any sort of real wear, yet, and I’ve had them for about a year. They don’t smell yet, either.

I would like another pair in a more neutral color so I could wear them more often, but I just ordered these instead for the summer.

@pinky44:  Love those keds!  I’ve been eyeing them!

I like the idea of tom’s, but I think a direct donation to a reputable charity – or better yet volunteer your time locally! – is a better way to give back.

RE: the Minnetonkas….  I have a pair that are super reliable, non-stinky and I got for $19.99 at Ross!  If you don’t have Ross in MT, it’s like Marshall’s and TJ Maxx.  So keep an eye out, you might find something you like more at a discount store.

I own several pairs of Sperrys and a pair of Toms. I wear the Toms occasionally – but I never wear them with socks, and they arent smelly and havent worn donw AT ALL and look brand new even wiht my living in NYC.  And you wont look hipster just for wearing them.  Im total opposite of hipster (total boat prep here lol) and lots of us wear them.  Just dont go full blown hipster outfit lol.  Id say-replace the Sperrys.  Theyre classic and last forever

Toms make my feet sweat – but most shoes do. I tried wearing them for a few hours, and I was a sweaty mess..

I’m wearing my gold TOMS right now, and they don’t make my feet sweat at all, even in DC heat.  I wear them all the time and they haven’t worn down.  And yes, they’re $50, but I do think they’re worth it.  I think $50 is worth it for a cute pair of shoes for me, and shoes for a child who needs them.  And re hipster, I think the hipsters have moved past TOMS….way too mainstream now hah.  But yeah, I plan on buying another pair soon, because they are so comfy.
