I had my tonsils out when I was in third grade.  My throat hurt really bad for about a week.  The bright side is that I don’t get strep throat 12-13 times a year anymore. Good luck 🙂

Good luck! I’ve had mine out, it definitely hurt, did not want to drink or eat anything after, but make sure you do so you don’t get dehydrated

Good luck!  But I am sorry to say that the horror stories of getting them out as an adult are 100% true.  But we all survive and it is definitely worth it to not have the constant issues anymore!  My doctor said that the recovery is 10 times worse in adults than kids.

It was a full two weeks before I started to feel okay again and I was taking narcotic pain meds as often as allowed (with normal pain meds in between narcotic doses). Forcing down some applesause or a pudding cup so that I could even take the narcotic put me in tears because it hurt so badly (have to eat food first to take it). And you have to constantly drink water/gatorade/etc to keep the wounds wet and just sipping anything hurt like HELL!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but be prepared to be absolutely miserable. I’m sure it sounds like I’m making this sound way worse than it could possibly be but it really was that bad.

Things that were good to eat (but still super painful):
Pudding cups

Things I really didn’t like having:
Ice cream – the milky coating it left over the wounds was unpleasent
Water – got really boring when you have to drink constantly

Its not as bad as everyone says I was back to my physically demanding retail job in 9 days (with lighter duties). Sherbert was really nice to use since it doesnt leave that milky residue but is cold and yummy. I lost 10 pounds which rocked to be honest. If you have family and friends who can take care of you it really helps. Make sure youve got a stash of movies to watch since the first few days sitting and typing hurt my throat. Hopefully your already on meds to prevent infection and pain its really an incredible technique there using now. Good luck and rest up.

I’m sorry you are scared – I was scared too!

I got mine out at 22 and it was honestly the worst experience of my life! But as a PP said – it sucks and it’s aweful to get them out as an adult – but WE HAVE ALL LIVED to tell the tale. And I NEVER get sore throats anymore… seriously NEVER! I have been so much healthier since the surgery I usually get a cold maybe once a year and this past year I didn’t get any colds. Whereas before the surgery I felt as if I was always sick!!!!

Good luck!  Let us know how it goes!  I feel like I should get my golf-ball (or bigger) size tonsils out, but I’m scared now!  Why didn’t I get them out as a kid?!?!

I was seeing an ENT since I was 2 and my tonsils where never bad until I hit my mid teens. I was 21 when they came out since they would get so swollen the would rub together and chaffe. My issue wasnt major infections just incredible swelling (the nursing students would stop me in the hall to take a look they thought it was so crazy). My surgery was on valentines day which was interesting but Fiance brought me flowers and coconut based ice cream. Just think this surgery is a lot easier than getting a new hip.

Ugh, good luck! My doctor suggested I get them out this year after I was in his office four times between Christmas and Easter with strep/sore throats – I’m just too scared! My pediatrician suggested it, too, but my hippy parents thought it was unnecessary….grr!

glad everything is going well!!! I had mine out a couple years ago and the worst part was just being sick of it. kind of like the 9th month of pregnancy when youre like “this was fine and everything but i just want to be FINISHED!!!” So idk if its really the pain that peaks after a few days, or that your tolerance for it disappears. but also, just when you think it can’t get any worse, it gets better!!
