Hi fellow bees!
I’m going to a bridal expo next month because I’ve been there as a bridesmaid and know that they have a lot of lovely dresses at super discounted prices. Well when I asked my mom if she wanted to come, she said I should go try on dresses at a bridal shop first to see what kind of styles I like so I know what I’m looking for before I go.
Also I should mention that I have ZERO idea what kind of dress I want, but I’m worried I’m looking too soon! Is a year and 4 months way too far in advance to be trying on dresses?

@felixfelicis: As long as you’re engaged, it’s never too early. Enjoy this fun time in your life all you can!
There is only six months between my engagement date and my wedding date, so I worked within those parameters to get my dress.

@felixfelicis: I don’t think it’s too soon. I also agree with your mom that it’s a good idea to go to a shop and try on a bunch of different styles to see what you like. I *thought* I would want a ball gown style, but turns out I adore the mermaid style. 🙂

@felixfelicis: Your mom makes a good point and I don’t think it’s too early. If you could narrow down the style you are looking for, you’d probably have more success at the expo. Have fun!

It’s not too early. My wedding date is a week before yours and I just booked my first dress appointment for late June. Also I agree with your mom that going to a bridal shop will give you a better idea of the styles you like and dislike.

I dont think it’s too early. I went dress shopping the very beginning of march this year and found my dress. I’m not getting married until June 28, 2014. It will give you more time to figure out what you really want in a dress.

@felixfelicis: I purchased my dress 17 months prior. I’m very picky so I wanted to get a head start. I knew it was *the dress* and zero dress regret. Wedding is a litte over a month away … can’t wait!

Thank you thank you thank you, ladies! You made me feel so much better and a lot more sane! haha I’m going to make my first appointment for next weekend and now I can’t wait! :))))

I don’t think it’s too early! If you end up falling in love with a dress early on in the process, just be sure to consider if you are willing to wait before buying it (research how much longer it will be easily available, etc.), and if you do buy it, be committed to avoiding looking at other dresses for the next year and four months!

I think if you have a vision for your wedding already (a type of venue, colors, whatever) then there is no problem looking for a dress. At first I wanted a sheath style dress with lots of lace (very breezy, beachy almost) but once I booked my venue I realized I needed something more formal and elegant (my venue was a huge southern plantation house).
I got my dress within like 2 weeks of getting engaged, but I had a 10 month engagement. As long as you are actually ENGAGED I see no problem at least looking early on! Just not if its one of those engaged to be engaged situations.

I went 8 months before my wedding date. I also bought off the rack and went home with it that day. But in case I didn’t find one there, I needed at least 6 months to plan for ordering one if it came down to that.
If you can nail down your style, what you like or don’t like, color, etc. it would make your trip easier and less stressful. If you have a solid vision of your wedding style, go for it. My only worry would be what if your theme or style changes or you change your mind? I’ve seen a lot of posts on here about dress regrets. Not trying to be negative or scare you, but make sure you LOVE the dress you pick!

@felixfelicis: I started 9 months before, but wanted to start sooner, but couldn’t as my MOH was getting married 10 months before me and didn’t want to overshadow. I would have like to allow at least a year to try on the variety of styles

You all have given me so much to think about! I just wanted to quickly say yes, we are formally engaged and have been for exactly 3 months tomorrow, but I never even looked at dresses before today, honestly. My mom is super excited about dress shopping and I held her off for as long as I could haha
FH and I are both in grad school and working part time, so I know it’s still over a year away but I was hoping to get quite a bit done this summer because next semester we start internships and whatnot. So far we’ve committed to the ceremony & reception venue, the colors, the favors (random, but I fournd something I loved right away!), the centerpieces, and are about to book our photographer, so I feel like the dress is the next logical step!
Sidenote: to all of you ladies who planned your wedding in a year or less: kudos to you because it’s already 3 months into our engagement and I feel like it’s flying by! I don’t know how you all got everything done so quickly without losing your mind! 🙂

I voted 1-6 mo because my engagement will only be three months long. I chose a short engagement because I wanted one, but I would never recommend that someone with a longer engagement wait until that time frame. The dress has been the most stressful part! I have my second fitting next week and it’s two weeks before the wedding ,heh.

@felixfelicis: My first bridal appointment was about 11 months before the wedding, but didn’t actually buy my dress till about 6 or 7 months before. I don’t think it’s a good idea to go shopping too early because styles change and new dresses are constantly designed.
