I had a long engagement but waited until I was about a year out to do most of the planning.  It’s just too easy to change your mind!  If you are sure about the big things like photographer and venue, it wouldn’t hurt to book early though!

@barceneaux91: I don’t think its ever too early. I’d rather have in my mind/wallet what needs to be done then find out that I’ve got to cut something or can’t have it becuase I waited maybe a lil too long. Besides when it comes to venues and some other things people have booked a year out and you may not get what you want. Good luck in the rest of your planning process.

Girl, I am getting married in June 2012 and I have my venue, DJ and am on my way to booking the photographer.

It’s never too early to plan!! Booking the big ticket items early means you get your choice of vendors without having to worry if your date is taken. I’m also using the extra time to test run some DIY projects.

The time goes by fast, so get things done now while you can, before it gets overwhelming!

Congrats, welcome and happy planning. 🙂

I’m getting married 6/23/2012…I already have my venue, dress, my sister has her Bridesmaid or Best Man dress, my invitations, card box, SIL is taking my pictures, other sister is making my cake, best friend is marrying us….as long as you’re not going to change your mind, I say go for it.  Oh and if you get your dress…STOP looking at dresses…I never understood the people who buy a dress and keep looking and then end up with three dresses…

If you are pretty solid about your vision then things like the dresses are okay to get early. I’m a little wishy-washy sometimes so I left those decisions for later. I had my venue booked in August of last year and everybody said I was crazy. The good things about planning early:

1) You can cost things out and plan accordingly.

2) You can track sales cycles for any decor items you might be interested in.

3) Plenty of time to recover from setbacks.

4) It’s less stressful and you don’t have to feel rushed into making any decisions.

Yeah, I’m a fan of planning early.

I’m planning early as well.  Granted, I am just getting started, but I want to be ready.  Most of my planning thus far is taking the form of list making and gathering inspiration.  I’m right at the beginning of the process for looking at venues.  I’m hoping to have at least the venue nailed down by the end of March, but we shall see.  I’m going to wait until summer to dress shop, mostly to see how much weight I can lose between now and then.

I’ve been waiting so long to plan, I don’t think there’s any stopping me now!

I’ve planned like crazy!

Booked/ purchased: photograher, photobooth, dress, jewlery

Near booked: venue, church, makeup artist

Ideas nearly confirmed: colorscheme, centerpeices, maids dresses, flower arragements, timeline, guestbook, cardbox, cake

I’m planning and booking big purchases early because this crap is expensive, and I know I’m guaranteed to get money from my parents and get the places I really want if I allow enough time for the payments to be spread out.

I bought my dress early because the place I found it out is getting rid of all their wedding gowns and I found a $900 dress for $200 which is pretty close to my dream dress and way close to my dream price lol… but I know if I’m a bit overwhelmed now, I’d freak out if I waited to plan and probably cancel everything and go to the judge… but that’s just me

I’m glad I came upon this post, because I was starting to wonder if I had too much done already. We have the venue, dj, photog, my dress, and the invite design set – and still have 18 months. I don’t think it’s never too early in the wedding world 😉 And I agree with what a lot of other bees mentioned – think of your personality. Will you be happy with what you choose now, a year down the line? I went through three different color schemes before I actually settled on one that I know I love and will love when we get married. I found my dress and knew that it was IT. No more looking!

My dress fitting was last night. But I just took her home, will wait for alterations. We have booked our venue as well. Our colours are Silver, Navy Blue and Green.

@barceneaux91 OMG! I was wondering the same thing.  But I’m getting married in November of 2012.  I have been so worried about planning early.  Not because I’m going to change my mind or anything but because people around me have been telling me its too early to plan.  But, I already have my dress and we booked the caterer yesterday.  I’ve decided that its my wedding and I’m going to do what I want to do.   Happy Planning! 🙂
