My lil guy is 2, and our fmaily members didnt hear me when i said NO TOYS!! instead they got him more then needed. There are so many toys, i have three huge toy boxes and like two full closets full of big item toys. I have been putting them in the basement hes not even playing with any of them. He plays with his hot wheels cars only. What do i do?
I have thought that since they dont get it and keep getting him toys, that i would just keep in box ask for recipt and return. Just say its not working or something. Or re sell online. But some toys are the real cheap ones that do break soon as you open, not even worth selling. I told them they should just give him money so when hes older its more apprieated. Ive said clothes, and then they get both. His playroom is covered in toys.

@suez: just thank them for their generosity and donate the things he doesn’t need.

Some people I used to babysit for had a “one-in, one-out” policy. For every new toy their kids got, they had to give a toy away. It’s never too early to start!

@Neetch: I was going to suggest this.
Also, how about opening an account for your kid that is a travel/college savings account and share the account number with those closest to you so they can transfer money to it directly.
Even if they dont actually transfer the money and end up writing a check, maybe the effort of giving them the # will make them realize that you are serious about no new toys and will encourage them.
Another request is that they spend time with him for a gift. Take him to the zoo or ice cream or aquarium.

@ThreeMeers: +1 to the time idea. It would give him a nice memory of something fun they did together AND give you some time to yourself, plus no new toys. Sounds perfect.

Every Christmas and birthday I hide away some of the toys that my girls get – because people always give them WAY too much. And then i donate them to Toys for Tots or a similar organizaion. My girls never miss it and I’m sure it makes some needy kid’s day.

All these ideas are great. I think just giving the account number send a direct message. Plus in and out rule is also perfect. I think hiding the toys are getting way too cluttered so donating them is also a great idea.
