Hello! I am newly engaged (well, 3 weeks today – wow, it doesn’t seem like that long!) and I am not planning on getting married until May of 2009. Everything that I have read says to register 7-9 months ahead of the wedding, for various reasons, including that things will be discontinued over the next year. My dilemma is that people are already asking where we are registered b/c they want to buy us engagement gifts. Should I go ahead and pick maybe one place to register and put a few things on there that aren’t necessarily in "sets" so that if they are discontinued, I don’t have half of a set or something like that….or should I just wait and tell people that we aren’t there yet and that we will be registering a few months down the road? Thanks for any advice!!

Congrats!! Go ahead and register and have some fun with the barcode gun! Just make sure you keep an eye on the list to moderate items that may be discontinued.
As far as choosing/not choosing things in sets, it really depends on the brand or store. Best bet would be to ask a store employee how often that brand discontinues items. Or go for a safe bet, like Lenox has had the same classic patterns since like when my parents were married way back in 1976!

Registering for engagement gifts (especially before a party) is a good idea. Just make sure to update it afterwards and check it every so often.

Fiance and I registered last month and our wedding isn’t until December. I wanted to register at Crate and Barrel which is near both our hometowns, but 4 hours from where we live. So over President’s Day we checked out the plates, etc. and made a registry of a few items like that. I plan to add to it significantly in the coming months.
The important thing (especially with places like Target that carry many seasonal items) is to keep an eye on the registry. My best friend and her husband registered at Target, but in the weeks before the shower nearly all of their registered had been clearanced out and was not available.
