- Wedding: January 2013
My requirements for my dress were pretty simple. I wanted sleeves or straps (because of the “girls” and so I didn’t have to bother with a cover-up for our Catholic service), a zipper or button back rather than a corset, and I was pretty sure I wanted diamond white or ivory, because I am fair-skinned. I’ve been looking at dresses online and in magazines since our engagement in February, and it’s been hard to find anything that fit the bill. When I went to try things on, I would inevitably end up trying on strapless dresses or corset-back dresses and the salespeople would tell me that I could always add straps or change to a zipper back– for the Allure dress I liked, this would have been a $200 pattern change in addition to the $1000 dress plus the cost of alterations such as adding straps, hemming and a bustle.
I had seen the Bonny Unforgettable style 1014 online but nobody had it in stock, and I couldn’t find any pictures of the dress anywhere except for the stock photos from Bonny. However, they have the Borrow a Bonny program. Luckily, I was able to find a shop somewhat local to me that was willing to work with it. AND they had my size AND color in the style that I wanted to try, brand new, with tags, that they could get to me by the end of the next week.
I was worried that I wouldn’t have that “moment” where I thought, “THIS IS IT!”. I’m a bigger girl, and I’m used to things not fitting. Plus, I knew that things would have to be altered, etc. Ya’ll– I put that dress on, stepped out and thought, “THIS IS IT”!!! I didn’t want to take it off. My Mom had come to visit over the weekend and she said, “I don’t know about you, but I think you’ve found your dress”.
So, within a half hour, I had found my dress AND my veil. Done. And it’s hanging in my closet and I can’t WAIT until January!!!
For any Birmingham, AL-area brides: I shopped at Bella Couture in Mt. Laurel, Diane’s in Jasper and The Curiosity Shop in Jasper– all three were friendly, although I found Diane’s to be less customer-focused. The woman I was working with wasn’t really listening to what I was telling me and was bringing me things that were completely the opposite of what I wanted. They seemed very sales/$-driven, whereas the other shops, while obviously wanting to make money, were INCREDIBLY friendly and helpful. My dress came from The Curiosity Shop. They are VERY nice, alterations are included and the prices are FANTASTIC!
